Fruit and Vegetable Entomology Research Assistant

Seeking a Research Assistant to help with insect field samplings and lab experiments. The position is based in Logan, Utah, at the Department of Biology, and will be filled as soon as a desirable candidate is found.
- Job description
The Demard Lab is recruiting a motivated student interested in insect pest management in Utah vegetable farms. This research program explores questions related to the management of pest and beneficial arthropods in fruits and vegetables to improve farm sustainability. Specifically, the candidate will be in charge of sampling thrips species and evaluating thrips susceptibility to commonly used insecticides in onion and squash. Applications will be reviewed by April 27th with an anticipated start on May 4th. The position will be active through the summer, with extension through fall/spring if possible.
- Responsibilities
Tasks include establishing a colony of thrips, plant and insect care, developing and updating protocols, field sampling, sample processing, slide mountings, lab bioassay with insecticides, and collecting and entering data. If desired, the candidate will be supported to develop an independent project. This position is ADA variable.
- Qualifications
Minimum requirements
- On-Campus ACA Variable US Work Authorization is required
- Good knowledge of Word and Excel
- Lab bioassay includes handling insecticides (with appropriate personal protection equipment), so a willingness to conduct insecticide trials is required
- Applicant with experience in a science-related field such as entomology, agriculture, biology, or ecology is preferred but not necessary
- Applicant must have a valid driver's license and be comfortable driving long distances
- Applicant must be interested and committed to working in the lab and field
- Willingness to learn new skills or techniques
Preferred requirements
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Attention to detail and comfort asking questions/directions
- Experience working with insects and/or insecticides is a benefit
- Ability to work in a team and independently in the lab
- Ability to work in the field in extreme conditions for several hours (hot and dry weather)
- Willingness to work with people from different backgrounds
- Students with an interest in building a multi-semester/year relationship would be preferred
