Medical Assistant

Title: Medical Assistant

Summary of Clinic Mission and Purpose

Qualifications

  • Must have certification as Medical Assistant
  • Must have current CPR certification within the first 90 days of employment
  • Must be conversationally competent in Spanish (preferred)

Job Duties 

  • Take patients’ vital signs and collect subjective data from patients or caregivers in English or Spanish.  Communicate deviations or significant history to provider.  
  • Determine required and recommended vaccines for patients of varying ages as needed, administer each type of vaccine and document the administration of each vaccine within the practice’s EHR and in Tennessee’s immunization information system (TENNIIS).  Determine dates for patients’ next immunizations and inform patients or caregivers.
  • Administer medications (IM/SQ/ID/PO/intranasally) as ordered by physician or nurse practitioner.
  • Administer nebulizer treatments as needed for patients during clinic visits utilizing the O2 sat finger probe for pre and post treatment readings. 
  • Perform screening tests according to the American Academy of Pediatrics periodicity chart (vision, hearing, lead & Hgb testing, PPD placement, transcutaneous bilirubin)
  • Collect and process rapid laboratory tests (ie Hcg, Strep, Flu, RSV and UA).  Practice basic phlebotomy to collect whole blood samples that are sent out for testing. Complete laboratory requisitions and prepare specimens for out-going laboratory tests.
  • In conjunction with provider, educate patients and their caregivers regarding such topics as immunizations, acute and chronic illnesses, development, safety, nutrition, laboratory testing, medications and when to call provider or go to the  Emergency Department.
  • May also include:
    • Call in prescriptions and communicate with pharmacies as ordered by physician or nurse practitioner.
    • Respond to patient/parent phone calls using Pediatric Telephone Protocols or as instructed by physician or nurse practitioner.
    • Field daily calls from patients and their families in English and Spanish.  Evaluate patients’ health needs and coordinate clinic visits when appropriate or offer encouragement and care-giving recommendations for the care of the patient in the home.  
    • Initiate follow-up communication with English- and Spanish-speaking patients or caregivers after a clinic or an Emergency Department visit to evaluate treatment and attend to additional questions or concerns.
