High School Media Center Specialist

TITLE: High School Media Center Specialist

QUALIFICATIONS:
● Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate.
● ND Endorsement preferred
● Understanding effective lesson design infused with technology.
● Experienced in maintaining library automation system preferred.
● Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills.
● Effective communication, organization, problem solving, and multi-tasking skills.
● Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
● Ability to interpret student needs and produce instructional materials.
● Ability to train and support students and staff in the use of educational technologies.
● Ability to adapt and learn new technologies.
● Comfortable with navigating new technologies and resources.
● Enthusiastic and Student centered.
● Secondary teaching experience preferred.

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

SUPERVISES: Library Media Center Aide and Students

JOB GOAL: Provides services focusing on the support of: classroom activities, building
initiatives, and District programs. To keep the media center space current, useful and
intentional for students and staff. Instructional design, staff/student support, and being
self-directed are key components of this position.
 

ASSIGNED RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist students and staff in developing information literacy.
    • Information literacy includes:
      •  
        • Identification - Recognizing the need for information and defining the
          scope of the required information
        • Access - Finding information using effective research strategies and
          efficient search tools
        • Evaluation - Critically assessing the accuracy, relevance, and credibility of
          sources
        • Organization & use - Applying information effectively to accomplish a
          specific purpose
        • Ethical Usage - Understanding the legal and social implications of
          information, including proper citation and avoiding plagiarism.
          Additionally, assist staff with use of the WISE framework for AI usage.
  • Collaborate with teachers to design and deliver instruction that develops students’
    disciplinary literacy ability to inquire, think critically, gain, and share knowledge.
    • Development of ready-to-go lessons in the LMS that staff can incorporate or the
      media specialist can teach
    • Frequent reaching out to staff on how the media center can support lesson
      design around information literacy
    • Provide monthly media center updates at staff meetings
  • Select, curate, promote, and model uses of physical, digital, and virtual collections of
    resources.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of a variety of information sources and services that support the needs of a diverse group of students and staff
    • Demonstrates knowledge of AI models and how they can best be used by staff
      and students to enhance learning, research, and advance student critical thinking
    • Leads professional development in this area during DPPD opportunities, staff
      meetings or after-school sessions
  •  Support technology management for the high school.
    • Develop, schedule and manage the collection and deployment of student devices
    • Support device damage assessments and contacting families regarding damage and fines
    • Coordinate with Media and Technology staff
    • Assist students with Media Center printing
    • Support staff and students with basic laptop, LMS, Promethean Panel and all current technologies utilized at the school
    • Train new staff in usage of the necessary technology and how the media center can support them and their students
    • Provide training for new students on their device and the media center space
    • Develop and maintain a media center space on the high school building LMS platform
    • Manage student opt-out devices
  • Manage student and staff collection of reading materials and curriculum materials.
    • Selecting, acquiring, and organizing a range of physical and digital materials that
      support school curriculum and student interests
    • Promote these resources to students and staff in an effective manner
    • Support staff in identifying appropriate texts for a school setting
    • Manage the book room and checking in and out of school curriculum materials
  • Manage the media center space
    • Promote the media center space as a flexible, welcoming, and productive hub for
      students to learn and appropriately socialize
    • Manage or assist teachers with students behavior and expectations while in the
      media center space
    • Provide a safe, productive space for students after school
    • Operate a testing center during SMART hour for students to have a quiet place to
      make up assessments from courses
  • Support the building MTSS program
    • Send families MTTS letters informing them of student enrollment in Tiered
      courses (and changes after data day)
    • Manage the implementation of the SAEBERS assessment
    • Coordinate with admin in charge of MTSS
    • Inform necessary parties of testing dates/windows for Fastbridge
    • Manage spreadsheet for data day (enter SE, Tier 3, etc. and make sure all
      columns are visible, sorted, and tiered for data day) before data day meeting
    • Set data day dates/times and inform all necessary parties
  • Support media center staff
    • Train and Collaborate with media tech assistants to assume the role of facilitators
      in key roles in the media center
    • Assists media techs with the use of the media center systems
    • Manage volunteers and student aides in the space
  • Work collaboratively with school administration
    • Provide frequent updates on the status of media center operations
    • Provide data of usage and/or effectiveness of programs or media center spaces
    • Detail plans for device deployment and collection
    • Present monthly staff updates at building staff meetings
  • Works Collaboratively with K-8 Media Specialists and the Curriculum Department to
    ensure K-12 alignment and Consistency
  • Develop and maintain the media center budget
    • Stay current on billing cycles of annual purchases
    • Review use of services paid for
    • Maintain proper supplies
  • Miscellaneous
    • Analyze school needs and how best the media center can support those needs
    • Develop a program to promote information literacy at home
    • Support emergency needs of the building in the media center space (ie class
      needs to be moved out of a room, a sub cannot be acquired for a class, etc)
    • Develop a curriculum, expectations, and learning management system presence
      that meets course expectations for any student course that is housed in the
      media center

● Perform other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as the building principal may
assign.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: In accordance with the negotiated contract.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the building principal or
designee.
