Hourly Rate: $17

The Latino Academy of Workforce Development (LAWD) is a nonprofit organization committed to providing adult education and workforce development opportunities for the Latino community. We offer hands-on learning experiences for interns interested in making a meaningful impact while gaining professional skills.

 

Position Overview

 

The Event Planning & Communications Intern will support the planning and execution of two major summer events that advance LAWD’s community presence and engagement. This is a project-based internship designed for a student or recent graduate with an interest in nonprofit development, community engagement, or workforce equity.

 

The intern will play a key role in strengthening LAWD’s outreach and engagement efforts by helping organize event systems, coordinate logistics, and develop clear, compelling communication materials. This position offers the opportunity to work across programs and teams while gaining hands-on experience in nonprofit outreach, storytelling, and event planning.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

The intern will support a set of integrated projects tied to event planning, outreach, and communications, including:

 

Event Planning & Coordination

  • Support the planning and execution of two large-scale summer events from preparation through follow-up
  • Assist in developing event timelines, task lists, and coordination systems to keep planning on track
  • Coordinate logistics such as venue setup, materials, volunteer roles, and day-of operations
  • Track event registrations, attendance, and participant engagement

 

Community Engagement & Outreach

  • Develop and organize contact lists for community partners, employers, and stakeholders
  • Assist with outreach efforts to promote events, including emails, calls, and follow-ups
  • Support coordination with partners, vendors, and collaborators involved in events
  • Help strengthen systems for ongoing partner engagement beyond events
  • Supporting LAWD in liaising periodically with the CommNS, such as engaging in meetings, attending events, and participating in professional development and networking opportunities

 

Communications & Marketing

  • Create outreach materials such as flyers, social media content, and email communications
  • Gather program information, participant stories, and visuals to support event promotion
  • Assist in maintaining consistent messaging across platforms
  • Support post-event communications, including thank-you messages and impact highlights

 

Cross-Team Collaboration

  • Work with program staff to align event messaging with workforce programs (construction, hospitality, transportation, GED, ESL)
  • Coordinate with staff to ensure events reflect LAWD’s mission and community priorities
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute ideas to improve outreach and engagement strategies

 

Qualifications

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Interest in event planning, communications, nonprofit work, or community engagement
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with or willingness to learn tools such as Canva, Google Workspace, and social media platforms
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred but not required
