Music Teacher

Job Classification: Exempt
Salary:  Based on approved 2026-2027 Salary Scale
Contract Length: 200 Days
Supervisor: Principal 

Job Summary

The Music Teacher is responsible for providing instruction in music and creating a safe, orderly, and engaging learning environment. The teacher will inspire students to develop an appreciation of music and enhance their knowledge, skills, and talents through a variety of instructional techniques appropriate to student interests and abilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Instruct students in developing music knowledge and skills according to the school board-approved curriculum.
  2. Encourage and foster an appreciation of the art of music.
  3. Demonstrate music techniques and concepts to students.
  4. Develop clear lesson plans and organize class time to balance preparation, instruction, and rehearsal.
  5. Provide individual and small group instruction; modify instruction for students with diverse abilities.
  6. Use varied instructional strategies and musical repertoire appropriate to students' age and skill levels.
  7. Establish and maintain standards of student behavior; ensure a safe and effective learning environment.
  8. Organize student performances during and outside of school hours.
  9. Plan, rehearse, and direct musical programs for school and community events.
  10. Teach students proper care and use of instruments and equipment.
  11. Maintain organized storage areas and control materials and equipment to prevent loss or damage.
  12. Keep an updated inventory of music materials and equipment; request repairs as needed.
  13. Evaluate student performance and growth; prepare and maintain progress reports.
  14. Confer regularly with parents/guardians regarding student performance and behavior.
  15. Collaborate with other staff members to address student learning, health, and behavioral needs.
  16. Maintain thorough records for each student.
  17. Select, requisition, and maintain instructional materials and resources.
  18. Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

Other Duties

  1. Participate in professional development programs, curriculum meetings, and other school-related activities.
  2. Stay current with research, developments, and new technology in music education.
  3. Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Instructional Supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in education or a related field.
  • Virginia Department of Education licensure eligibility to teach music.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver effective instruction and communicate clearly.
  • Knowledge of music techniques, skills, and instructional methods.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, and staff.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity to use phones, computers, and other classroom equipment.
  • Ability to see, hear, and speak at levels necessary for classroom instruction.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 25 pounds, bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
  • Work is primarily in classrooms with occasional field trips; noise level usually moderate.
