PRIMARY FUNCTION
The Early Childhood Special Education Teacher provides services in an elementary school program and/or in the child's home depending on the child's individual needs. The teacher serves children aged two to four with developmental delays, as identified through the Special Education eligibility process. The teacher provides small-group and individualized instruction in a consistent daily routine, assisted by an assigned paraprofessional.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Eligibility for Virginia teaching licensure, with the appropriate endorsement
- Excellent communication and computer skills
- Demonstrates accurate knowledge of evidence-based teaching practices (reinforcement, prompting, visual schedules, antecedent based intervention, etc.)
- Demonstrates accurate knowledge of the learning and behavioral characteristics of the disabilities of the students with whom they work.
- Ability to make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures
- Satisfactory completion of all onboarding requirements prior to first day of employment, including but not limited to:
- Documentation of eligibility for employment in the U.S.
- Virginia State Police/FBI criminal history background check
- Virginia Department of Social Services background check
- Tuberculosis test/screening completed within the last 12 months
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Meet and instruct classes at designated locations and homes
- Plan programs of study that meet individual needs and align with state/local objectives
- Create a classroom environment conducive to learning
- Prepare for classes and provide written plans upon request
- Use a variety of instructional techniques and media appropriate to student needs
- Implement district philosophy and instructional goals through action and instruction
- Regularly assess student progress and provide reports as required
- Recognize learning difficulties and seek specialist assistance as needed
- Take precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
- Maintain accurate records as required by law and policy
- Support administration in implementing policies and rules for student conduct
- Maintain and improve professional competence
- Be available for educational purposes outside instructional hours as needed
- Plan and supervise assignments for paraprofessionals/volunteers and assist in their evaluations
- Attend staff meetings and participate in school committees and improvement activities
- Serve as a model for effective communication and correct language usage
- Employ daily teaching objectives to guide student learning
- Integrate technology into instruction and ensure compliance with AUPs
- Attend evening activities as requested (e.g., open house)
- Demonstrate courteous, respectful behavior and maintain confidentiality
- Model non-discriminatory behavior
- Perform related duties as required

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Average levels of climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting (up to 25 lbs.), grasping, talking, and other repetitive motions.
