MSF currently operates activities in 35 countries with a wide spectrum of programs. The Medical Project Unit in MSF New York is part of the Medical Department of Operational Center – Paris (OCP) and provides technical support for: Tropical Medicine, Infectious Diseases (including antimicrobial resistance (AMR), medical quality, and medical article writing and publication.
Project
The Medical
Editor of MSF-USA works with medical and field staff to disseminate research
findings and perspectives, and to increase the visibility of MSF medical
research within medical, research, and policymaking communities. This is done
through peer-reviewed journal articles; scientific conference abstracts, presentations,
and posters; MSF technical publications; and special projects and events.
The Medical Editing Intern will work with the Medical Editor on further
developing and updating a database of MSF research publications. An
undergraduate student with interest medical publishing, library science, and
humanitarian medicine would best suit this position.
Objective: To support the Medical Editor of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins
Sans Frontières (MSF), while learning about humanitarian medical research and
medical/scientific publishing for an international nongovernmental
organization.
Tasks
• Assist
with further developing database tools to store and disseminate information on
MSF publications (50%)
• Perform literature searches for articles on various medical topics (20%)
• Enter data on MSF research publications into databases (20%)
• Other tasks as assigned (10%)
Requirements
Required
Skills:
• Proficiency with Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word
• Proficiency in medical literature searches (PubMed, Google Scholar)
• Good understanding of scientific/medical publication practices
• Excellent research and writing skills
• Strong interest in medical/scientific publishing and humanitarian medicine
and research
Preferred Skills:
• Programming experience in Visual Basic
• Background knowledge of data structures, relationship-based databases.
• Expertise and interest in knowledge management and/or outcomes research
• Experience using reference management tools such as Mendeley
