Programming & Outreach Graduate Assistant

Women's Center/LGBT Resource Center Programming & Outreach Graduate Assistantship

Position Number and type: 1 20 hour/week, on-campus

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, coordinate, publicize, and host educational and social programming related to gender and sexuality, including hosting speakers and special events, interdepartmental programming collaborations, and awareness/commemoration months. 
  • Conduct outreach activities to market Women’s Center/LGBT Resource Center programming and services, including regular tabling, contributing to social media activities, developing educational materials, and representing the Women’s Center at events.
  • Assist in development, revising, advertising, and delivering educational presentations to campus and community groups, including the LGBTQ+ Advocate Power-Up Series and other presentations as requested. 
  • Contribute to assessment of programming, services, educational presentations, and student engagement.
  • Engage with a variety of student concerns relating but not limited to personal, academic, and/or identity development.
  • Assist with general office support, such as answering phone calls, replying to emails, and greeting visitors in a positive and professional manner.

Learning Outcomes

  • Event Planning & Coordination: The GA will successfully organize, implement and assess educational, awareness, and social programming to advance women and LGBTQ+ people, support equity and build feminist/LGBTQ+ community. This will include generating ideas/topics, setting goals, team/committee work, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility: Develop knowledge and skills needed to analyze, strategize, challenge, advocate, and resist systems of oppression to promote collective social change. 
  • Leadership: The GA will develop skills and knowledge to lead committees and projects. 
  • Communication: The GA will progressively improve oral and written communication skills, including those needed for effective presentations, professional introduction of speakers, panel and committee facilitation, and written work that is professional, strategic, and relevant to the audience. 
  • Ethical Professional Practice: Develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to understand and apply ethical standards to one’s work.

Qualifications

Required

  • Be enrolled full-time (8 or more credits) in a Master’s graduate program, preferably in Higher Education and Student Affairs, Social Work, Counseling, or other relevant fields.
  • Candidate must support the vision and mission of the Women’s Center/LGBT Resource Center and must demonstrate understanding of issues related to women, gender, and sexuality and their intersections with race, socioeconomic status, disability, and/or additional identities. 
  • The candidate will be able to demonstrate a commitment to equity, anti-oppression, and social justice. 
  • Strong communication skills (verbal, interpersonal, written, and public speaking) are essential. 
  • Ability to work occasional evenings (2-4 evenings a semester for special programs and events). 
  • Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Office 365, Canva, and social media platforms of Facebook and Instagram.

Preferred

  • Experience with event planning.
