Police Officer
Position Summary:
Perform general police work on all St. Croix Tribal trust lands to maintain public safety through the enforcement of Federal and State laws and Tribal ordinances.
Essential Functions and duties
- Patrol assigned areas to deter and detect criminal activity.
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service including crimes in progress, accidents, medical emergencies, disturbances, and other public safety incidents.
- Enforce Federal, State, and Tribal laws and ordinances within the Department’s jurisdiction.
- Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations including interviews, evidence collection, and case documentation.
- Issue warnings, citations, and make arrests when appropriate.
- Serve arrest warrants and search warrants.
- Prepare accurate reports and documentation for review by supervisors, prosecutors, and courts.
- Collect, preserve, and process evidence and property.
- Transport arrested individuals to the appropriate detention facility when required.
- Testify in Tribal, State, or Federal court proceedings when required.
- Assist other law enforcement agencies through mutual aid when requested.
- Coordinate with emergency services, Tribal departments, and community organizations.
- Participate in community engagement activities and events to promote trust and cooperation.
- Maintain proficiency in department-required certifications including firearms, defensive tactics, and emergency vehicle operation.
- Attend training required by the Department, Wisconsin DOJ, or Tribal Government.
- Maintain assigned equipment, vehicles, and firearms in proper working condition.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police or designee.

Physical Demands/Environment Factors:
Police officers perform duties in a wide variety of physical and environmental conditions.
Officers must be able to:
- Walk, run, climb, bend, kneel, and crouch while performing patrol or responding to emergencies.
- Occasionally lift, carry, or drag objects or individuals weighing over 100 pounds.
- Use physical force techniques to restrain individuals when necessary.
- Sit for extended periods while operating a patrol vehicle or completing reports.
- Stand for extended periods during incidents, investigations, or community events.
- Perform duties under stressful or potentially dangerous conditions.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, sleet, and wind.
- Work shifts that extend past midnight or into early morning hours.
Officers may be exposed to hazards including firearms, edged weapons, aggressive individuals, bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids, infectious diseases, and high noise environments.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be 21 years or older
- 60 college credits within 5 years of hiring
- Must hold certification or be certifiable as a Law Enforcement Officer in the State of Wisconsin
- Pass a formal background investigation
- Submit to drug testing during application process and subject to random testing
- Free from and physical, emotional, or mental health conditions that would adversely affect the performance of Law Enforcement duties
- Must possess a valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record
- No felony convictions or domestic abuse convictions
- Ability to use radio equipment, computer equipment and telephone equipment
- Proficient in verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to multi-task while being detail oriented
- Ability to prepare clear and accurate reports
- Ability to handle stressful situations under time constraints with absence of supervision
- Must maintain confidentiality of organizational information
- Ability to maintain proficiency in required qualifications including but not limited to firearms and emergency vehicle operation
- Show awareness of St. Croix Tribal culture and history
Preferred Qualifications:
- Completion of a two-year Associate Degree from an accredited Collegiate or Technical School in Criminal Justice or Law Enforcement or higher
- Active certification as Law Enforcement Officer in the State of Wisconsin
Native American Preference Given in Accordance with P.L. 93-638 and Amendments
