Risk Management Intern

The Risk Management Intern supports Knife River’s risk management and insurance programs by assisting with data analysis, reporting, and administrative support related to operational, financial, and insurance‑related risks. This internship provides valuable exposure to corporate risk management, insurance programs, regulatory compliance, and cross‑functional collaboration.

This is an excellent opportunity for a student interested in finance, business, risk management, human resources, accounting, or related fields to gain practical, resume‑building experience.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (minimum educational, experience, or other relevant job requirements)

 

  1. Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Human Resources, Risk Management, Business Administration, or a related field 
  2. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel 
  3. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills 
  4. Ability to communicate effectively with team members and external partners 
  5. Interest in learning about risk management, insurance, and compliance
  6. Ability to hold and maintain proper licensure and acceptable driving record.

 

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS (preferred requirements i.e. certifications, software use, etc.)

 

  1. Coursework or interest in risk management, insurance, human resources, finance, or analytics 
  2. Familiarity with data analysis, reporting, or business systems 
  3. Knowledge or ability to learn Smartsheets
  4. Interest in the construction, manufacturing, or heavy civil industries 
  5. Desire to pursue professional certifications such as ARM or CPCU in the future

 

DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES (summary of components that make up the job) 

 

Under the guidance of experienced professionals, the intern will:

 

  1. Assist in filing and managing claims.
  2. Assist in analyzing operational, financial, and insurance‑related risks
  3. Collect and organize data related to claims, losses and audits
  4. Help prepare reports, dashboards, and summaries for management review
  5. Coordinate with internal teams and external adjusters on claims
  6. Assist with loss prevention, safety, and risk control initiatives
  7. Monitor regulatory, market, and economic developments impacting risk exposure
  8. Maintain accurate documentation related to insurance policies and claims
  9. Follow all safety protocols and actively promote a safe work environment
  10. Perform other duties as assigned
