Finance Summer Intern

The City of Phoenix Finance Department is responsible for maintaining a fiscally sound organization that conforms to legal requirements and to generally accepted financial management principles. As a service department, Finance lends our professional expertise to all departments and functions in the City of Phoenix. The services provided in the Finance Department include:
 • Acquisition, leasing, and disposal of real property.
 • Procurement of general goods and services.
 • Processing accounts payable, accounts receivable, and City payroll.
 • Financial reporting and systems integrity, accounting, capital financing, and      investments.
 • Risk management and recovery of Citywide damages.
 • Banking and cashiering, treasury, and tax compliance services.

ABOUT THE SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Our intern assignments are as varied as our department divisions. You will gain exposure to a variety of divisions and projects. This internship will give you an opportunity to gain insight into the world of government finance. Work may relate to business applications, financial accounting and reporting, procurements, real estate, revenue collections, or risk management. No matter which opportunity you choose, you will be contributing to the success of Finance’s core business strategies.

This is a 12-week internship program, starting June 1, 2026, and ending approximately August 21, 2026. End date may be flexible based on when you return to school.
• Finance regular business hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
• Interns work up to 20 hours per week.
• Intern hours: Four- to eight-hour shifts, two or three days per week.
Work Conditions
• Work is normally performed in an office environment.
• Ability to work under pressure.
• Attention to detail is essential.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills and technical capabilities are essential to the positions.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
• Interns must be enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program at an accredited college or university in the following targeted majors: Finance, Accountancy, Supply Chain Management, Economics, Public Service and Public Policy, Business Administration, Computer Information Systems, Business Management, or Sustainability. Other majors may apply based on internship requirements.
• Interns must be headed into junior year or higher.
• Interns must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher.
 

INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES
• Familiarize yourself with the procedures/guidelines for the internship.
• Create goals and objectives for your internship.
• Conduct yourself in a professional manner.
• Be timely with all required written communications.
• Communicate effectively with your assigned supervisors.
• Seek opportunities to complement your work and educational experiences.
• Assist staff on projects and assignments.
• Plan for each area/project you are assigned to; ask questions if in doubt.
• Practice excellence in your work.
• Be flexible by being available of the times and dates assigned to you.
• Notify your supervisor in advance of any anticipated absence from work within established City guidelines.
• Evaluate each program and meeting you attend and discuss your observations with your supervisor.
• Be willing to offer new ideas.
• Be professionally dressed and groomed for all assignments.
• Be friendly, courteous and treat everyone in all circumstances with dignity and respect. You are a representative of the City of Phoenix and the Finance Department.
• Ask for advice from your supervisor or the Internship Coordinator regarding any problems you cannot successfully solve yourself.
• Become involved in any opportunity presented to you.
• Communicate openly, honestly, and professionally with all people with whom you come in contact during your internship.
 

POTENTIAL INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Administration Intern
The Administration Intern reports to the Finance Department’s Administration Division. Administration is comprised of the Chief Financial Officer, the Finance Director, the Assistant Finance Directors and a team of administrative professionals who assist the department with budgeting, procurement planning, responding to resident inquiries and public records requests, and other duties. 

The Administration Intern will assist with:
• Developing a “Records Roadmap” guide for Finance staff who track and process records for retention and/or destruction.
• Developing a “Customer Service Academy” for customer-facing staff in our Payment Center.
• Leading other Finance interns in a group project to refresh the department’s intranet site.
 

Enterprise Resource Planning Intern
The Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Intern reports to the Finance Department’s Enterprise Resource Planning Division, which provides business and technological solutions to City departments that support key financial data such as accounting, procurement, budgeting, fiscal services, and human resources.  

The ERP Intern will assist with:
• Developing reports and dashboards in SAP Analytics (SAC).
• Data migration archives for SAP S/4 HANA implementation.
 

Financial Accountant and Reporting Intern
The Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR) Intern reports to the Finance Department’s Financial Accounting and Reporting Division, which is responsible for providing current, comprehensive, and accurate information about the financial position of the City. 

The FAR intern will assist with:
• GASB 87/94/96 contract and valuation review.
• Capital asset procedure review.
• Damage billings Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) digitization.
• Examining, cataloging, labeling, storage, and/or destruction of division files.
 

Procurement Intern
The Procurement Intern reports to the Finance Department’s Central Procurement Division (CPD). CPD is responsible for overseeing goods and services procurement and related contract administration in accordance with Chapter 43 of the Phoenix City Code (the "Procurement Code") and related laws, regulations, and standard operating procedures. 

The Procurement Intern will assist with:
• Ensuring data in the procurement portal is current, complete, and accurate.
• Processing a small-dollar purchase to gain exposure to how purchase requests become orders.
• Reviewing and testing procurement training modules for clarity, accuracy and usability, and identifying opportunities to improve the learner experience.

Revenue Collections Intern
The Revenue Collections Intern reports to the Finance Department’s Revenue and Risk Management Division, Revenue Collections Section. The Revenue Collections Section is responsible for citywide collections. 

The Revenue Collections Intern will assist with:
• Reviewing Debt Set Off (DSO) thresholds and updating receivable balances.
• Reviewing Arizona Department of Revenue query reports, compiling data, and preparing correspondence.
• Running damage claim reports and organizing supporting documentation.
• Reconciling collection agency inventory with internal records.
• Standardizing claim tracker data and organizing legal packets.
 

Risk Management Intern
The Risk Management Intern reports to the Finance Department’s Revenue and Risk Management Division, Risk Management Section. Risk Management oversees the process of claims management and risk mitigation. 

The Risk Management Intern will assist with:
• Analyzing incident and claims data related to the City of Phoenix Water Services Department and identifying recurring hazards.
• Examining, cataloging, labeling, storage and/or destruction of claim files and other documents.
• Developing an onboarding guide for new Risk Management team members.
