Recreational Water Quality Intern

Overview

The Utah Division of Water Quality within the Utah Department of Environmental Quality seeks a full time, paid summer intern to assist with the UDWQ Recreational Water Quality Health Advisory Program. The UDWQ Recreational Water Quality Health Advisory Program protects and advises recreationists in the summer with testing, monitoring, and communication of water quality issues related to harmful algal blooms (HABs) and waterborne pathogens. This internship is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in public health data, fast paced scientific decision making, data analysis and organization, interdisciplinary coordination, and science communication.

Duties

This is a dynamic position that will work with scientists, field technicians, and a communications team over the course of the summer. Duties will include biological and chemical data entry and analysis, coordination with field crews and analytical laboratories, automating coordination workflows, utilizing remote sensing, and content building for the habs.utah.gov website. If desired, water quality field work can also be a component of this position. 

Qualifications

UDWQ seeks applicants with:

• Experience with data entry and analysis 
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Familiarity with ecology/biology principles
• High attention to detail
• Proven ability to work independently
• Preference to applicants who also possess coding experience

Additional Information

This position is full time and will run from May - October 2026 with the option of flexibility in the later months to accommodate changing schedules. Applicants will have the option to telework during the summer but must be located in the State of Utah.
