Wildland Fire Internship

About the Role

This paid internship provides hands-on experience in wildland fire management while you’re still in school. As a Student Trainee, you’ll train alongside professional firefighters and gain real-world experience in fire suppression, fuels management, and fire operations.

This is part of the federal Pathways Internship Program, offering a direct pipeline into a full-time wildland firefighter career after graduation.

What You’ll Do

  • Participate in wildland fire suppression activities (fireline construction, hose lays, mop-up) 
  • Assist with fuels management and prescribed fire projects 
  • Learn fire behavior, safety protocols, and operational procedures through on-the-job training 
  • Work as part of a fire crew or module in field environments
  • Support prevention and preparedness activities

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled (or accepted) in a high school, college, or graduate program
  • At least 18 years old
  • Maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher
  • Ability to follow instructions and work in a team environment

You must meet one of the following:

  • 6 months of general work experience
  • OR 1 year of education beyond high school
  • OR a combination of both 

Preferred Background

  • Interest in wildland fire, natural resources, or emergency response
  • Outdoor experience or physical work experience
  • Fire science or related coursework (helpful but not required)

Physical & Work Requirements

  • Pass the Work Capacity Test (3 miles with a 45 lb pack in 45 minutes) 
  • Work in rugged outdoor environments (heat, smoke, steep terrain) 
  • Lift 50+ lbs and perform physically demanding tasks
  • Willingness to work overtime, shifts, and travel (~50%) 

Work Schedule

  • Flexible during the school year (part-time or full-time)
  • Full-time during summer  

Career Pathway

This internship is designed to lead into a permanent role. Successful interns may be converted into a Wildland Firefighter (GW-0456) position after completing:

  • 480 hours of work experience
  • Degree or certificate program
  • Program requirements
