Pharmacist Intern

Job Summary 

The Pharmacist Intern supports the safe and compliant dispensing of cannabis products at Ayr Wellness’s Virginia cannabis dispensing facility. This part-time role operates under the direct, on-premises personal supervision of a licensed Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) in full accordance with Virginia Code Title 4.1 Chapter 16, Board of Pharmacy regulations (3VAC10-30-90), and all applicable Virginia Cannabis Control Authority requirements. The Pharmacist Intern must hold a current, unrestricted registration as a pharmacy intern issued by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy and must have completed at least the first professional year of an accredited pharmacy school program. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

Under the direct, on-premises supervision of the licensed Pharmacist-in-Charge at all times: 

Assist with dispensing activities to ensure cannabis products are provided accurately and in compliance with Virginia regulations and Ayr Wellness operating procedures 

Verify patient certifications, identification, and required documentation prior to dispensing 

Review dispensing quantities to ensure products are dispensed within state-established limits 

Provide product information and usage guidance to patients within the lawful scope of practice for a pharmacy intern under Virginia law 

Assist with entry of dispensing information and patient history into required data and recordkeeping systems 

Assist with preparation of labels for cannabis products, including patient information 

Assist with the removal, measuring, packaging, and labeling of cannabis products for dispensing under pharmacist supervision 

Maintain accurate dispensing records and ensure required documentation is completed in all systems 

Support inventory controls, product handling, and recordkeeping standards in compliance with state requirements 

Assist with audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews as needed 

Help maintain a safe, organized, and compliant dispensing environment at all times 

Other duties as assigned 

 

Note: The Pharmacist Intern may only perform duties within the dispensing area under the personal, on-premises supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The intern may not perform any duties independently or when a licensed pharmacist is not physically present on the premises, per 3VAC10-30-90 and Virginia Code § 4.1-1602(F). 

Qualifications 

Current, unrestricted registration as a Pharmacy Intern issued by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy — required 

Ability to meet all Virginia state licensing and regulatory requirements related to cannabis dispensing facilities 

Strong understanding of applicable state regulations, dispensing requirements, and recordkeeping standards 

Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with patients, team members, and leadership 

Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy in a regulated environment 

Must be at least 18 years of age per Virginia cannabis facility employment requirements (3VAC10-30-90(I)) 

No prior suspension, revocation, or denial of a pharmacy intern registration, per 3VAC10-30-90(J) 

Education 

Currently enrolled in and have completed at least the first professional year of an accredited Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program — required per 3VAC10-30-90 

Experience 

Prior experience in a retail pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, or regulated dispensing environment preferred 

Familiarity with patient-facing roles and customer service in a healthcare setting a plus 

Working Conditions 

This person may be exposed to cannabis plant material, kief, cleaning chemicals, and fumes. Although systems are in place to remove these byproducts, there is still exposure to some degree. This role operates in a licensed Virginia cannabis dispensing facility subject to state regulatory oversight and inspection at any time. 

Physical Requirements 

Sitting, standing, and walking motion/movement required throughout the shift 

Ability to remain on feet for extended periods in a retail dispensary environment 

Occasional lifting or moving items up to 25 pounds 

 

Virginia Regulatory Compliance Notice 

This position operates within a Virginia-licensed cannabis dispensing facility and is subject to all applicable requirements under Virginia Code Title 4.1, Chapter 16, Virginia Board of Pharmacy regulations (3VAC10-30), and oversight by the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority. All activities must be performed under the personal, on-premises supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The Pharmacist-in-Charge is responsible for determining the number of interns, technicians, and trainees who can be safely and competently supervised at one time, not to exceed six persons performing pharmacy technician duties simultaneously, per Virginia Code § 4.1-1602(M).
