Student Assistant in Research Development

The Research Administration and Development (RAD) Unit in the Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences is seeking a current UCI undergraduate student with computer science and data analysis skills to support data-driven research development initiatives. The student will work closely with the Research Development Lead and RAD staff on projects that apply clustering, text analysis, and AI-enabled workflows to better understand faculty research strengths and support strategic grant development. This position includes a planned overlap and training period with a graduating student employee to ensure continuity across ongoing projects.

Key Responsibilities:

- Support development, refinement, and interpretation of clustering and similarity analyses related to faculty research areas and funding opportunities
- Write, test, and maintain Python (required) and/or R code for data processing, analysis, and visualization
- Assist with AI-enabled workflows, including natural language processing of abstracts, proposals, and publications
- Clean, organize, document, and version datasets and codebases
- Contribute to internal analytical tools, scripts, or dashboards used for research development strategy
- Prepare documentation and handoff materials to support continuity of projects

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

- Current UCI undergraduate student
- Coursework or experience in computer science, data science, informatics,     statistics, or a related field
- Demonstrated experience with Python
- Familiarity with data analysis libraries (e.g., pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, tidyverse)

DESIRED:

- Experience with clustering, machine learning, or text analysis methods
- Experience working with real-world or messy datasets
- Interest in research analytics, higher education, or academic research ecosystems
- Experience using Git or other version control systems
