Diversify Internships

Summer 2026 Cohort: June 15 – August 21
We’re excited to offer the following eight (8) internship opportunities:
- Archives Intern – Stationed at the Elsie Stuhr Center, our 55+ recreation facility, this intern will support the center’s archival work. They will support historical preservation by organizing, cataloging, and digitizing records, manuscripts, and photographs. Ideal for those pursuing degrees or interested in Library/Archive Sciences, History, Museum Studies, and Public Administration.
- Community Gardens Technician Intern– We are seeking a self-motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our Community Gardens team! The Community Garden Technician Intern will conduct regular site visits across 17 garden locations to assess plot compliance, safety, and overall site conditions. This role serves as an on-site resource for gardeners, answering questions and providing guidance to support successful plot maintenance. Additionally, the technician will assist in developing a comprehensive participant onboarding program to help new gardeners understand expectations, resources, and best practices. Ideal for those pursuing degrees or interested in Horticulture, Program Development, Community Outreach, Natural Resources, etc.
- Digital Engagement Intern –The Digital Engagement intern will be assigned to the Administration Office. This intern's primary duties will focus on creating and executing a full photo coordination system for events, programs and activities across the district. They will build a photo capture calendar/spreadsheet, coordinate with contracted photographers, and draft shot lists by program type. The intern will track event coverage gaps, collaborate with volunteer services & their volunteer photographers, continue organize and tag photo libraries. They will also produce one 60-90 second "Summer at THPRD" recap video. Capture supplemental B-roll, coordinate with photographers for clips, write a script or voiceover outline, and edit final version. Ideal for those pursuing degrees or interested in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Graphic Design, and Digital Media.
- Exercise Science Intern – Come learn and work in THPRD’s Fitness Program! The fitness program offers personal training, 200+ aquatic and land group fitness classes, and specialty programs such as adaptive, older adult fitness, and community-based initiatives. Support specialty exercise programs like REVIVE and fitness programming at the Elsie Stuhr Center. Work on exercise screenings like senior fitness assessments and functional motor screenings. Work in our personal training and group fitness program - shadowing trainers, working on exercise/class programs. Support youth and teen fitness classes. Ideal for those pursuing degrees or interested in Fitness & Wellness, Health Sciences, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Health Promotion, Physical Education, etc.
- Social Media & Video Intern – The Social Media & Video intern will be assigned to the Recreation Division. Primary duties will focus on creation and development of social media content for the district’s philanthropic arm, which may include content creation, photography, videography, photo/video editing, and developing a content calendar. They will also assist in content gathering and creation for community centers and programs within the Recreation Division. A potential final project may include producing a video highlighting THPRD programs and services to be used for philanthropic purposes. Ideal for those pursuing degrees or interested in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Graphic Design, and Digital Media.
- Sports Operations Intern – This intern will be assigned to our Athletic Center on the Howard M. Terpenning Recreation Complex. This intern's primary duties will focus on directing and assisting tournament management and coordination. The intern will facilitate in increasing accessibility at our facility and external fields through signage updates and more. This position will also support future sport program development. Ideal for those pursuing degrees or interested in Sports Leadership & Management, Tourism, Recreation and Adventure Leadership, Sports Communication, and Outdoor Leadership.
- Sports Policy Intern– This intern will be assigned to our Tennis Center on the Howard M. Terpenning Recreation Complex. This intern's primary duties will focus on policy and best practice development for our new pickleball facility which we will be breaking ground on this summer 2026. In addition, they will be involved in program development for the new facility. Ideal for those pursuing degrees or interested in Sports Leadership & Management, Tourism, Recreation and Adventure Leadership, Sports Communication, and Outdoor Leadership.
- Trades Technician Intern – This intern will learn about a career in parks and recreation by serving in a support role for the Facility Trades department. The intern’s primary duties will include training with and assisting our skilled Trades Tech’s on a variety of work orders at THPRD facilities. Work may include carpentry, plumbing, flooring, painting, drywall, HVAC, and more. Another project will include tracking and cataloging paint data across the district. Ideal for those pursuing degrees or interested in Park and Recreation, Construction Management, HVAC, Plumbing, Carpentry, Electrical Trades, Painting, and Welding.

Internship Schedule & Hours
These internships are budgeted for 10 weeks and up to 24 hours per week or 240 hours total over the course of the internship. The district will work with interns to develop a schedule that works around their current class schedule. Hours will vary depending on the program’s needs and may include weekend days and evenings. Part-time employees are scheduled variable hours and may work less than 1,560 hours per year.
Compensation
The hiring rate for this position is $20.15. The full hourly range for this job classification is $20.15 to $22.71. Staff may be eligible for a merit increase at the end of September.
The district also provides a bilingual pay incentive to staff who regularly use their bilingual or multilingual skills!
Job Duties
Typical job duties vary based on the program area and include both administrative and field experience interacting with patrons to:
- Perform a wide variety of work duties and responsibilities based on assignment, academic coursework, and/or degree program.
- Conduct research and analysis; prepares project reports, progress summaries, spreadsheets, and other written materials.
- Assist in the development and delivery of program materials and program area activities.
- Schedules and facilitates meetings with staff, (which may be indoors, outdoors and/or virtually) as needed to accomplish project goals.
- Perform data entry. Prepare and/or proofread a variety of forms, letters, flyers, promotional materials, etc.
- Research policies, procedures, guidelines, and standards; identifies opportunities for improvement and makes recommendations.
- Assist in promoting positive public relations and customer service for various programs, services, or activities. Attend and participate in staff meetings, trainings, and workshops. Participate in various phases of a planned training and evaluation of the internship program.
Qualifications & Position Details
Interns in this position will work with a supervisor to collaboratively identify steps to complete the project that fit both the intern’s goals and the district’s needs. Interns will also gain experience working with cross-district employees while contributing to a positive and inclusive experience for community members.
Previous experience in the focus area is desired, but not required. Successful candidates will have a basic understanding of software and computer operations, written and verbal communication, basic math, and an interest in fitness and/or recreation.
