Small-Town and Rural Student Ambassador

Small-Town and Rural Student Ambassador  – STARS College Network

 

The University of Iowa Office of Admissions is seeking three Small-Town and Rural Student Ambassadors to assist with Small Town and Rural Student (STARS) Network programming on campus. This position will primarily be responsible for: connecting with prospective rural and small-town students and their families through in person and virtual programming. This position is supervised by Jess Dillahunt, Senior Admission Counselor. 

Duties and Responsibilities May Include:

  • Serve on in-person and virtual student panels sharing their student experience at the University of Iowa
  • Assist with outreach as needed by completing postcard and email campaigns
  • Assist with emails from prospective students, parents, and their families
  • Conduct administrative duties or tasks to assist in the daily functions of the STARS at Iowa programming, including projects requiring the use of Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Participate in STARS related programming, including but not limited to: STARS Advisory Board, Hawkeye Visit Day, Junior Hawkeye Visit Day, Admitted Student Day, STARS Visit Day, and Virtual Programming
  • Other projects or tasks as assigned

Qualifications Required:

  • Have experience with rural or small-town populations (personally or professionally) 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Interest in sharing personal experiences with prospective students, their families, high school counselors, educators, etc. 
  • Hold full-time, first, second-, or third-year status
  • Availability for Friday visit events, specifically from 8:00-10:00 a.m. and noon-2:00 p.m.

Qualifications Desired:

  • Public speaking experience & ability 
  • Basic proficiency in organizational skills 
  • Basic proficiency in office support tools including Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Zoom. 

Terms of Appointment:

  • This position is stipend-based. A stipend of $800 per semester will be provided. 
  • Hours: Anticipate most responsibilities to occur during business hours (8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required. Friday availability required. 
  • Students will be required to attend and successfully complete required trainings. Regular communication with supervisor regarding availability expected. Trainings must be completed within three weeks of start date.
