Substitute Teacher
The Opportunity: You’re ready to take the lead. As a Substitute Teacher with Swing Education, you aren’t just "covering" a class, you're the instructional leader for the day. Whether you are testing the waters of a teaching career or building a standout resume in education or psychology, this role offers real-world classroom experience entirely on your terms.
Why Swing is a Different Kind of Partner
We aren’t a staffing agency; we are your direct employer and partner in your career journey. We’ve designed this role with students and recent grads in mind:
- Total Schedule Control: Forget the traditional 9 to 5. Use our app, text, or email to claim shifts that fit around your classes or other commitments. You pick the schools, days, and grade levels.
- Leadership in Action: Step into the lead role. You will guide the class, execute prepared lesson plans, and set the tone for the learning environment.
- Earn While You Learn: If you don't have your teaching credential yet, you can start immediately in support-based roles (like a Paraprofessional) while you work toward leading a classroom.
- We Help You Get Certified: Navigating state requirements can be confusing. Through our Permit Assist program, we provide the step-by-step guidance you need to secure your official NJ Substitute Credential.
What You Need to Get Started in NJ
To lead a classroom as a Substitute Teacher, you need a valid New Jersey substitute teaching credential. You can qualify for this credential if you meet one of the following:
- Option 1: An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree (any major).
- Option 2: At least 30 or 60 college credits.
Additional Requirements:
- A willingness to complete a background check and TB test (we will walk you through this entire process).
- A responsible, empathetic mindset and a genuine desire to support student success.
(Note: If you do not have your NJ credential yet, apply anyway! You are still eligible for Paraprofessional roles and can use Permit Assist to reach your goal.)
A Day in the Life

- Classroom Management: Guiding student behavior, keeping the energy focused, and maintaining a positive, inclusive environment.
- Independent Problem Solving: Adapting on the fly to ensure students have a seamless and supportive educational experience.

- The Boost: High-priority and last-minute roles offer increased pay of up to 50% more.
