Who We Are:
The Safety & Industrial Hygiene group is responsible for ensuring the safety and health of personnel. This is done through assessing the work environment to develop and implement safety practices, monitoring compliance with regulations, and fostering a culture of safety awareness. The group is comprised of safety professionals that collaborate together to support the needs of the operating divisions and to create a strong safety culture.
Objectives of this Role:
- Assess workplace hazards and identify risks across a variety of programs and projects, including research and development, operations, and industrial processes.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses to determine root causes and prevent future occurrences, while preparing detailed reports of findings.
- Conduct project reviews and evaluations to enhance process safety, workplace safety programs, and compliance with regulatory and internal standards.
- Collaborate with teams to ensure the organization achieves compliance with applicable safety, health, and occupational laws and regulations (e.g., OSHA requirements).
- Serve as a resource for employees and management regarding safety-related matters and provide guidance on meeting safety objectives.
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
- Conduct regular workplace inspections to identify hazards, assess risks, and recommend corrective actions to eliminate or mitigate risks.
- Oversee implementation of Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements when required and work with Program Managers to enact PSM best practices in projects that do not meet the PSM thresholds.
- Using a knowledge of chemistry and physics, assess projects to ensure mitigation of hazardous conditions, evaluate chemicals involved in processes to confirm that materials being used are compatible and personnel are protected from any emissions or exposures.
- Assist Incident Investigation teams in investigating and classifying safety incidents, as well as providing support in the development of process tools and action plans to close identified safety gaps.
- Provide Emergency Response support as required.
- Develop and conduct safety training for Institute Staff on safety and regulatory requirements (e.g., OSHA, NFPA, DOT, etc.).
Requirements:
- Requires a Bachelors degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental/Industrial/Civil Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Public Health, or related degree with relevant work experience.
- Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) Associate Safety Professional; BCSP Certified Safety Professional; Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) preferred but not required.
- 2 years: Experience in Hazard Analysis, OSHA compliance, and/or Industrial Hygiene.
- 2 years: Knowledge of chemistry and how it impacts processes and potential personnel exposures.
- A valid/clear driver's license is required.
