Position Summary
The Wound Care Nurse & Infection Control Specialist is responsible for overseeing all aspects of wound management and infection prevention within the facility. This role ensures compliance with regulatory standards while promoting optimal healing outcomes and maintaining a safe environment for residents and staff.
Key Responsibilities
Wound Care:
- Assess, develop, and implement individualized wound care plans
- Perform and oversee treatments for pressure injuries, surgical wounds, and chronic ulcers
- Monitor wound healing progress and adjust care plans as needed
- Collaborate with physicians, therapists, and nursing staff on treatment plans
- Educate staff on best practices in wound prevention and care
Infection Control:
- Develop, implement, and maintain infection prevention and control programs
- Monitor and track infections, outbreaks, and trends within the facility
- Ensure compliance with DPH, CDC, and CMS infection control regulations
- Conduct infection control audits and provide staff education/training
- Lead response efforts for infection outbreaks and ensure proper reporting
Clinical Leadership & Compliance:
- Ensure adherence to Medicare and skilled nursing facility regulations
- Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives
- Serve as a clinical resource for staff regarding wound care and infection control
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation
Requirements
- Valid nursing license with current registration; experience in nursing roles emphasizing critical care or medical-surgical environments preferred.
- Wound Care Certification
- Demonstrated expertise in wound care management within hospital settings or assisted living facilities; experience at Level I or Level II trauma centers is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, microbiology, epidemiology, and infectious disease processes relevant to wound healing and infection control.
- Proficiency in data management systems including MDS (Minimum Data Set), medical records review, and documentation review processes.
- Excellent patient observation skills combined with leadership qualities to guide staff in infection prevention practices.
- Familiarity with OSHA regulations, HIPAA privacy standards, medical terminology, and public health principles essential for safeguarding patient information and safety.
