2026 Summer Internship in Independent Publishing

Guilford Press, an independent academic/scholarly publisher of evidence-based works in Psychology, Education, Research Methods, and related fields for professionals, students, and general readers is accepting applicants for its 2026 Summer Internship in Independent Publishing.

Guilford seeks a Summer Intern with the following qualities.

  • Highly motivated for professional experience during the summer.
  • Eager to learn from, assist, and collaborate with publishing professionals in a collegial office environment.
  • A passion for publishing (books, journals, digital products) or any of the career paths—such as acquisitions, editorial, marketing, business operations, or sales—associated with successful independent publishing.
  • An interest in any of the subjects —psychology, mental health and wellbeing, education and teaching methods—in which we publish, would be a plus.

Responsibilities

Interns may do the following over the summer while with Guilford Press.

  • Work with acquisitions and editorial teams to prepare manuscripts for production.
  • Manage outreach and collaboration with academic partners to secure their timely reviews of manuscript proposals and draft chapters.
  • Conduct market research and competitive reviews on key titles in collaboration with marketing teams and acquisition editors.
  • Assist in preparing manuscripts for audiobook vendors, coordinating with editorial teams, authors, vendors, and marketing teams.
  • Organize marketing contacts associated with email outreach and conference follow-up.
  • Conduct title and customer account research in support of sales team and key sales campaigns.
  • Learn and execute other day-to-day publications-related tasks, as well as other administrative tasks necessary for running a successful independent publisher and business.

Qualifications

Interns should have the following traits and qualifications.

  • Organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize duties with attention to detail and deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a business environment.
  • Familiarity and some hands-on experience with Microsoft Office systems (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Required Education

  • Applicants must be enrolled currently in an undergraduate or graduate program of study, or be a recent (less than a year) graduate of such a program.
  • Undergraduate or graduate students in English, Communications, Publishing, Marketing, Psychology, or Education studies are preferred; however, as long as there is an interest and enthusiasm in what the internship offers, any degree or major will be considered.

Additional Requirements and Details

  • Applicants must be able to commit to a ten to twelve-week internship and work from Guilford Press’ New York City (Midtown Manhattan) office.
  • Interns are paid $18 per hour for a schedule of approximately 15 to 20 hours per week.
  • The 2026 summer internship will run from approximately late-May/early-June through August 2026.
