- does pre-layout for each print issue (putting correct date and issue #; new vol. # each academic year)
- uploads every article onto the NI website using SNO content management system
- manage/update the website design in consultation with executive editor and advisors
- completely reviews each print edition before it goes to press
- reviews each online story and element (including all cutlines, headline, and photos) before they are uploaded to northerniowan.com
- brings new design elements to feature stories on the website
- ensures there is at least one photo/graphic for every online story
- creates and sends weekly newsletter
- loads finished issues on to ISSUU for archiving on the NI web site
- places pre-designed ad copy/graphics from clients in the newspaper on assigned dates (works with NI publisher on receiving and scheduling ads)
- makes recruitment ads for paper
- designs original ads for clients, if necessary
- optimizes, selects, and edit photos for stories
- creates some graphics for the NI
- fills in for the executive editor when that person is not available
- works with executive editor to create social media strategy
- oversees posts of photos/images/videos to NI social media accounts
- sends digital pages to the Rod Library archivist, as needed
- reports and writes at least one story a week
- required: experience as a journalist at the Northern Iowan or other news organizations; or experience with a marketing organization
- required: excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
- preferred: experience with Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Canva and other design tools
- preferred: experience with social media design
