Environmental Affairs: Compliance Intern

Summer Intern for Alabama Power’s Environmental Compliance team 

 

Job Summary 

 

The Alabama Power Environmental Affairs Department, located in Birmingham, AL, is seeking a qualified candidate to be a summer intern. This role involves working with all 3 of the Compliance sections. The intern will work with each of the air, land and water teams on a variety of projects.  This position will support each area which is tasked with overseeing programs that ensure compliance with all air, land and water related environmental laws, regulations, and permit requirements. Key responsibilities may include reviewing regulations, providing guidance and support to affected facilities, assisting with permit applications, calculating emissions, assisting in submitting various regulatory reports, visiting plant sites and other activities to help prepare the intern for future jobs. 

 

Job Duties  

 

Review regulations and assess compliance requirements for affected facilities   

Work alongside other compliance staff members to promote teamwork with peers and to provide support  

Assist in preparing reports for submittal to regulatory agencies 

Attend audits/inspections by regulatory agencies 

Review data to identify any occurrences outside normal operational parameters 

Developing spreadsheets  

 

Job Requirements (Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities) 

 

Education: Seeking a student pursuing the following degrees: 

Engineering degree which could include Civil, Chemical, Environmental discipline 

Biology, Chemistry, or an Environmental Science degree 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

Knowledge of science and/or engineering principles 

Experience in environmental projects or regulations and permitting is advantageous 

Ability to utilize Microsoft software such as Excel, PowerPoint, etc. 

Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and computer skills 

Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills 

Attention to detail with a focus on quality, accuracy, and timeliness 

Ability to assess situations and communicate effectively 

Capacity to manage multiple work assignments simultaneously

Hybrid Work Schedule (in-office and telecommute; currently 4 days in-office and 1-day telecommute)
