Community Habilitation Specialist (Part-time)

Join Our Team as a Community Habilitation Specialist in NYC!

As a Community Habilitation Specialist, you’ll be a guide, mentor, and advocate, helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities live their best lives via skills training, fostering independence, and creating enriching experiences. You will empower the people you support to pursue their dreams and live more fully, both at home and in the community.

You’ll Focus On:

  • Supporting a person one-on-one in their home and community.
  • Traveling to outings and activities around NYC.
  • Assisting the person with work towards their chosen goals in areas including socialization, travel training, communication, activities of daily living, etc...

This position allows you to directly impact someone’s journey toward greater independence, all while having fun and creating memorable moments along the way!

The Schedule:

This is a part-time position. The role typically offers some flexibility with hours, working between 16-40 hours per week, generally between the hours of 3pm to 8:30pm.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Education: A High School Diploma or GED is preferred. We highly value continued education in fields like Psychology, Social Work, Art Therapy, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Nursing, or any other related fields.
  • Skills: You should display excellent communication skills (reading, writing, speaking) and have basic technology skills to document observations and monitor progress.
  • Comfort with Daily Living Skills (ADLs): You should feel comfortable assisting individuals with ADLs (activities of daily living) like bathing, dressing, grooming, cooking, and traveling.
  • Training: You must be able to participate in the 5 day NYS Mandated OPWDD initial training during normal business hours (9am-5pm) upon hire.
  • Health Requirements: A tuberculosis test is required before the start date.

Additional Skills:

  • Candidates with proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) are especially encouraged to apply!
