R2026103257 Chemistry Learning Assistant (CHEM LA)

Position Summary

The Learning Assistant Program is excited to invite you to apply to join our team of CHEM Learning Assistants (LAs)!  This is a great position for those who have been successful in CHEM 107, CHEM 111, and/or 113 and enjoy helping people connect to concepts.

As an LA, you will support students’ academic success in foundational chemistry courses by facilitating active learning & small group discourse in a variety of settings (lecture, group learning sessions, and small group tutoring). While helping students practice with course concepts, LAs further their own understanding of course content through preparation.  LAs also learn, plan, and reflect on effective pedagogy with the support of the faculty instructors & program coordinators.

Working in the LA role will provide you with personal and professional development in communication skills, teaching and facilitation skills, critical thinking, leadership, and much more!

Required Job Qualifications

  • Successful completion of CHEM 107, CHEM 111, and/or CHEM 113 (received a final grade of B+ or better, or on track to achieve this grade if currently enrolled in the course)
  • Ability to consistently attend class sessions alongside enrolled students for your assigned section of the course (see job application for details)
  • Ability to consistently attend the weekly prep meetings with the faculty instructors and other LAs (see job application for details)
  • Ability to register & attend 1-credit pedagogy course Learning Assistants in Higher Education (IU 274) on Thursdays, 4:00 – 4:50 pm (or have successfully completed IU 274 on a previous semester)
  • Ability to complete the LA Program onboarding course (through Canvas, prior to pre-semester training)
  • Ability to attend (in person) the required pre-semester trainings on Friday, August 21, 2026 from 10:00 am – 4:30 pm
  • Ability to complete additional training sessions as scheduled throughout the semester
  • Ability to dedicate 3-4 hours per week to preparing & facilitating active learning with students in a variety of settings (including some hours in the evenings)

 

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the Learning Assistant (LA) model – whether by engaging with LAs while a student enrolled in a LA-supported course or by working as a LA in a course using the LA model

 

Essential Duties

  • Facilitate active learning, small group activities and assist students in developing their understanding of chemistry concepts
  • Invest in building rapport, supportive relationships, and a sense of community with the students in your assigned section of lecture
  • Take initiative to approach and engage students to in learning opportunities, share resources, and address questions/concerns
  • Engage in weekly prep meetings with the course instructors, regularly review the course materials (syllabus, Canvas, lecture slides, assignments), provide feedback to the instructor about student progress, and share ideas to enhance student success
  • Successfully complete the one-credit pedagogy course IU 274: Learning Assistants in Higher Education (during first semester in the role) to strengthen your understanding of teaching & learning
  • Prepare active learning activities to implement with students during Group Learning Sessions and small group tutoring sessions
  • Communicate with course instructors and LA Program staff (Program Coordinators, Lead LA, fellow LAs) regarding student, program, and team needs

Pay Rate: 16.00/hr
