Field Application Engineer (PUI Audio)

Job Title: Field Application Engineer (FAE) – PUI Audio
Reports To: NA Sales Director
Location: East or West Region (Remote within territory, up to ~40% travel)

Position Summary

The Field Application Engineer (FAE) is the primary technical interface between PUI Audio and OEM customers, working closely with independent manufacturers’ representatives (Reps), Inside Sales, and PUI’s engineering team. This role combines strong customer-facing communication skills with solid technical expertise in electro‑acoustic components and electronics to identify, develop, and win new design‑in opportunities.

The FAE supports exploratory customer visits and video calls, differentiates PUI technically versus competitors, and drives opportunities through the sales funnel from early concept through design‑in and production.

Key Responsibilities

1. Technical Pre‑Sales & Opportunity Development

  • Partner with Reps and Inside Sales to plan and execute exploratory OEM customer visits and video calls.
  • Lead technical discovery: understand customer applications, performance targets, constraints, and competitive context.
  • Identify and qualify new design‑in opportunities; document requirements and potential annual revenue in the CRM.
  • Recommend best‑fit PUI Audio products and architectures to meet customer requirements.

2. Solution Design & Differentiation

  • Provide detailed technical support on PUI Audio’s product portfolio (buzzers, speakers, microphones, transducers, etc.).
  • Develop and present technical presentations, demos, and proof‑of‑concepts that clearly articulate PUI’s value vs. competitors.
  • Collaborate with customers’ design and engineering teams to optimize product selection, placement, and system performance.
  • Coordinate and track samples, evaluations, and test results; ensure outcomes and next steps are captured in CRM.

3. Cross‑Functional Collaboration & Escalation

  • Work closely with Inside Sales and Reps to move opportunities through the sales funnel, ensuring clear next actions and timelines.
  • Escalate to PUI engineering when deeper technical knowledge, customizations, or special qualifications are required.
  • Translate customer requirements into clear, actionable engineering requests (specs, drawings, test conditions, etc.).
  • Provide timely feedback to Sales Director and Product/Engineering on market trends, unmet needs, and competitive activity.

4. Distributor & Rep Training

  • Deliver technical product and application training to distributor field offices and rep firms (onsite and virtual).
  • Support joint sales calls with distributors to drive design‑ins at shared OEM accounts.
  • Create or help refine technical collateral (application notes, reference designs, presentations) to support the field.

5. Post‑Sales Technical Support

  • Provide technical troubleshooting and support during validation, pre‑production, and early production phases.
  • Assist customers in resolving integration issues, performance deviations, and qualification questions.
  • Monitor field performance and work with engineering on corrective actions or product improvements when necessary.

6. Process & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate, up‑to‑date technical notes, activities, and opportunity status in the CRM.
  • Support the NA Sales Director on large opportunities (> $50K annual potential) with technical strategy and customer engagement.
  • Contribute to territory and account reviews, including pipeline health, design‑in status, and technical risks.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Acoustics, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical field; equivalent experience considered.
  • 3+ years in a customer‑facing technical role such as Field Application Engineer, Sales Engineer, or Design Engineer.
  • Hands‑on experience with electro‑acoustic components or related electronics (audio, sensors, signal processing, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of basic analog/digital electronics, acoustics, and system‑level design trade‑offs.
  • Demonstrated ability to present technical concepts clearly to both engineers and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Comfortable traveling within assigned region (overnight travel as required).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with or for component manufacturers, distributors, or independent manufacturers’ reps.
  • Familiarity with OEM design cycles, from concept through validation and production.
  • Experience using CRM tools (e.g., Salesforce, HubSpot, MS Dynamics) to manage opportunities and activities.
  • Knowledge of target verticals for PUI Audio (e.g., medical, industrial, consumer, automotive, IoT).

Key Competencies

  • Customer Focus: Builds trust with customer engineering teams; anticipates technical needs and risks.
  • Technical Depth: Quickly grasps new technologies and can relate them to customer applications.
  • Collaboration: Works effectively with Reps, Inside Sales, Engineering, and the Sales Director as one team.
  • Communication: Clear written and verbal communication; strong presenter in person and via video.
  • Problem Solving: Structured approach to diagnosing issues and driving to closure.
  • Ownership: Proactive, organized, and accountable for moving opportunities forward.
