Summer Peace Camp Counselor

Job Title:      Summer Peace Camp Youth Counselor

Status:         Full Time - Seasonal

Reports to:   Community Specialist


Primary Function/Purpose:

The Summer Peace Camp Counselor is a paid youth employment position for individuals ages 16–24 who are committed to providing a positive youth development experience for campers enrolled in Peace Learning Center’s Summer Peace Camps. Camp counselors play a vital role in creating a welcoming, inclusive, and restorative camp culture for campers and peers alike.

 

Position Responsibilities:

Camp Facilitation (100%)

  • Actively support daily camp activities, including team-building exercises and recreational programming, and assist lead facilitators with preparation, clean-up, transitions, and group management
  • Serve as an ambassador for Peace Learning Center’s mission, modeling empathy, inclusivity, and collaboration.
  • Supervise campers during on-site and off-site activities, including trips to Eagle Creek Park Beach, Earth Discovery Center, and/or playground
  • Contribute to a safe and inclusive camp environment by addressing conflict using restorative approaches
  • Communicate effectively with PLC staff and if needed, caregivers, regarding camper needs, concerns, or incidents
  • Attend all required training sessions, staff meetings, and camp preparation days
  • Serve as a role model and mentor for campers and junior counselors throughout the camp experience
  • Adhere to safety and care guidelines and necessary logistics to ensure a safe camp experience
  • Participate in youth development program evaluation and provide feedback to improve youth employment programming

Position Competencies and Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Ages 16–24 at time of employment
  • Access to reliable transportation 
  • Commitment to PLC's mission of peace-making 
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Reliable, responsible, and punctual
  • Comfortable working with children and youth in a structured program setting

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous participant in other PLC programming (i.e. former summer camper, Indy Peace Leaders, peer mediator)
  • Previous experience working with children/youth in camps, schools, after-school programs, or community settings
  • Multi-lingual
  • Familiarity with restorative practices, peer mediation, conflict resolution, and/or character development
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Demonstrated leadership in school, community, or extracurricular settings

Pre-Employment Requirements (Age-Based):

  • Applicants ages 18–24: Must successfully complete a background check prior to the start of employment
  • Applicants ages 16–17: Must provide a signed parent or guardian employment consent form and submit one professional or character reference from a teacher, coach, or community adult prior to the start of employment

 

Compensation & Hours

  • Pay rate: $12.00 per hour
  • Mandatory paid training: Tuesday, May 26th through Saturday, May 30th 9am-4pm
  • Seasonal position running the duration of Summer Peace Camp 2026: June 1st through July 24th
    • PLC will be closed June 19th for Juneteenth and July 3rd for Independence Day
  • Position expected to work 40 hours a week between 9am and 6pm; specific schedule provided upon hire
