Fitness, Recreation and Outdoor Programs Assistantship Job Description
Programming and Events
- Under the direction of the Assistant Director develop, plan, and execute a reoccurring weekly program and singular events through the semester for college-aged students with various skill levels that includes fitness, recreation and outdoor programming.
- Assist with research, development and facilitation of opportunities for new recreation on campus.
- Help coordinate, organize, and run the intramural sports program. Help develop new programs as needed to enhance student participation and engagement.
- Help ensure that all logistical elements of programs on and off campus are managed, including transportation, food, communications, contracts, and payments.
- Maintain statistics for program attendance.
- Assist with campus-wide programming such as Orientation, Family Weekends, Open Houses, etc.
Facility and Equipment Management (Click Family Sports Center and Outdoor Facilities)
- Help keep an inventory of and maintain all equipment relating to fitness, recreation and outdoor programs.
- Help ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and standards, including safety risk management, and accessibility.
- Support facility operations and maintenance, by inspecting equipment and submitting work orders where necessary for all facilities under the prevue of the Athletics Department including the Click Family Sports Center, all fitness centers on campus and outdoor recreational areas (including a ropes course, disc golf course, and campus trails).
Publicity and Marketing
- Under the direction of the Assistant Director, design, market, and post flyers for the semester’s events.
- Help ensure that all calendars, publicity, and marketing messages remain updated, current, and comprehensive. This includes but is not limited to web presence (College intranet, external website, social media), publications, posters, flyers, newsletters, calendar of events, blogs, and other creative campus-wide communications.
- Take photos at events and share them with the Athletics, Fitness and Recreation Department, Yodeck, as well as the Marketing department
Other Responsibilities
- Assist with student leadership training programs.
- Collaborate with other departments for programs, events, publications, marketing, and facility maintenance.
- Serve as a liaison for Student Employees within the Athletics, Fitness, Recreation and Outdoor Programs Department.
- Facilitate user groups within the Athletics, Fitness, Recreation and Outdoor Programs Department.
- Become a Landmark College “approved driver” and assist with driving for off campus programming and trips.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support Landmark’s Office of Athletic, Fitness, and Recreation or Student Affairs Division.
Skills and Qualifications
- Associates Degree, Bachelor’s Degree preferred with experience in sports, fitness, recreation, outdoors activities, learning differences/LDs and social media.
- Passion for athletics, fitness, recreation and the outdoors and a commitment to promoting healthy and active lifestyles.
- Ability to engage and manage long-term planning, scheduling and project development.
- Ability to organize and manage multiple projects and program areas effectively.
- Ability to gain proficiency to help facilitate ropes course, climbing activities, recreational sports and outdoor programming.
- Knowledge or ability to learn sports rules including but not limited to volleyball, basketball, kickball, dodgeball, broomball, floor hockey, softball, ultimate frisbee, etc.
- Knowledge of student development theory.
- Ability to work independently as well as with a team to meet goals.
- Experience working with students with learning disabilities is preferred.
- CPR/AED and First Aid certification or ability to gain within 1 month of hire.
- Ability to obtain shuttle-driving certification which includes a written and practical test and an evaluation of driving record.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including regular evenings and weekends.
- Seek out professional development in the areas of Athletics, Recreation and Outdoor Programs.
Work Environment:
Work is performed indoors in an office environment and outdoors where there is exposure to extremes of weather and temperature. Including but not limited to all fitness centers on campus, athletic fields (on campus and rented facilities), Game Lab, and outdoor recreational areas (including a ropes course, disc golf course, and campus trails). Extended activities in uneven and varied terrain may be required. Outdoor work areas vary from established recreation areas to outdoor rock climbing and hiking.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; jog/run; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; drive a College vehicle. Ability to occasionally lift, carry, and/or drag approximately 50 pounds. On occasion, this position may require laborious physical demand and exposure to extended periods in heat/frigid temperatures.
