Job Description
Lightkeepers International is hiring a part-time Chess Instructor to lead fun, beginner-friendly chess classes for PreK–3rd grade students in an afterschool program located in Park Slope, Brooklyn. This role is ideal for education, childhood studies, or arts majors who enjoy working with young children and want hands-on teaching experience.
Responsibilities
Teach basic chess rules, piece movement, and simple strategies using games, stories, and visuals tailored to ages 4–9.
Lead small groups independently, keeping students engaged, safe, and included.
Set up and break down materials, manage transitions, and support positive behavior.
Collaborate with the site coordinator, follow school/agency procedures, and communicate any concerns promptly.
Qualifications
Prior experience working with children (camp, tutoring, afterschool, babysitting, or classroom support).
Comfort with chess fundamentals and ability to explain rules to complete beginners.
Reliable, punctual, and professional; able to commit for the semester.
Patient, energetic, and culturally responsive in working with diverse communities.
Details
Location: Park Slope, Brooklyn (school-based afterschool site).
Schedule: Weekday afternoons (approx. 2:30–5:30 pm), 1–3 days per week.
Employment type: Part-time; afterschool, with possibility of summer and future semester work.
Compensation: Competitive hourly rate based on experience.
