Software Engineer Intern (Fintech)

Surlamer Investments is a Newport Beach-based private investment firm with a portfolio spanning algorithmic hedge funds, public markets, and technology-based private ventures.

 

We are incubating a FinTech startup at the intersection of AI and public markets, developing tools that give private investors institutional-grade decision-making capabilities through AI, large language models (LLMs), and advanced algorithms. 

 

This role is best suited for candidates with a strong technical foundation and an interest in financial markets and data-driven applications. You will work closely with engineers, analysts, and leadership to implement, test, and continuously improve core platform functionality, contributing directly to system performance, reliability, and product evolution.

 

Program:

  • Job Type: Internship
  • Pay: $35/hour
  • Length: 10 weeks (Summer) | Potential for longer-term in the future
  • Time Commitment: 40 hours/week

 

Responsibilities

  • Contribute directly to the core codebase by implementing and improving features that impact platform performance and functionality
  • Contribute to backend infrastructure development for reliability and speed of execution (Cloud, AWS, Terraform, CI/CD)
  • Analyze existing systems and identify opportunities to improve performance, scalability, and reliability, and execute on those improvements
  • Design and optimize APIs and backend services that support financial data processing and platform operations
  • Build and enhance data pipelines and integrations with external financial data sources, ensuring accuracy and efficiency
  • Debug complex issues and improve overall code quality and system stability
  • Collaborate with engineers and analysts to translate business and product requirements into well-structured technical solutions
  • Evaluate system behavior and user workflows to propose and implement meaningful technical enhancements, not just incremental fixes

 

Qualifications

  • Strong programming skills in Python and JavaScript are required, with the ability to read, understand, and improve existing code 
  • Soon-to-be or recent graduate from a competitive university with a background in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related field
  • Understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including algorithms, APIs, and system design principles
  • Experience debugging and improving backend systems
  • Experience integrating APIs and working with external data sources
  • Interest in financial markets, trading systems, or data-driven applications is a plus
  • Must be able to work on-site in Newport Beach
