Communications Director

Communications Director Sacred Heart Pastorate (Holy Family Parish, Holy Spirit Parish, and St. John Paul II School) Mitchell, South Dakota

Position Type: Full-Time, Hourly $24+ DOE, Non-Exempt, Benefit Eligible 

Position Summary

Sacred Heart Pastorate is seeking a passionate and creative Communications Director to lead all communications, marketing, and outreach efforts for Holy Family Parish, Holy Spirit Parish, and St. John Paul II School.

In this vital role, you will develop and implement high-quality internal and external communications that inform, engage, and unite our parish and school communities. You will create compelling content across digital, print, and social media platforms while providing essential administrative and event support. This position plays a key role in helping our faith community stay connected and vibrant.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, produce, and distribute the weekly bulletin, staff newsletter, and seasonal liturgical materials (Christmas, Lent, etc.) through print and digital channels including the MyParish App, Flocknote, and email.
  • Manage and grow the pastorate’s social media presence, websites, and digital signage; create engaging flyers and promotional materials for ministries and special events.
  • Maintain staff directories, organizational policies, master calendars (internal and external), and manage web forms (Google Forms). Lead annual calendar planning.
  • Oversee school communications, including monthly lunch menu updates and annual data management in Thrillshare.
  • Produce the pastorate’s annual report and submit newsworthy highlights to the Diocese.
  • Take meeting minutes for staff sessions and conduct monthly reviews of website and social media analytics.
  • Collaborate on special campaigns and events; coordinate outsourced services such as website design, photography, videography, and print production.
  • Serve as the primary communications liaison with church ministries and act as the point-of-contact for parishioners sharing information.

Essential Qualifications

Primary Qualifications

  • Willingness and ability to effectively communicate the teachings of the Catholic Church through all ministry activities.
  • Commitment to live and witness as an outstanding example of the Catholic faith in both professional and personal life, in full accordance with the doctrines and moral teachings of the Roman Catholic Church (including the Catechism of the Catholic Church).

Education

  • Minimum two-year post-secondary degree in Communications, Public Relations, Graphic Design, Marketing, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).

Experience & Skills

  • Proficiency (or ability to quickly become proficient) in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Canva, Adobe InDesign, Ministry Platform, Thrillshare, MyParish App, and Microsoft Publisher.
  • Strong experience with website management, social media strategy, and email marketing.
  • Creative design skills to produce beautiful, professional materials that promote parish and school events.
  • Proficiency in photography and videography (shooting and editing).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Other Requirements

  • Actively practicing member of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment, multitask, and adapt to changing priorities while maintaining strict confidentiality.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Office-based role with occasional work at various parish and event venues.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull items up to 30 pounds.
  • Frequent sitting (approximately 90% of the workday), with the ability to stand, bend, stoop, climb stairs, and perform repetitive hand/wrist motions.
  • Strong close vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment required.
  • Must be able to multitask effectively while meeting deadlines in a detail-oriented environment.
