CAD & GIS Intern

About the Position: Under the supervision of the CAD Manager, the CAD/GIS Intern supports drafting and mapping work for Des Moines Water Works by assisting with CAD design, as-built documentation, and GIS data maintenance. This role provides hands-on experience with field data collection, digital mapping, and utility infrastructure analysis while contributing to engineering studies and the accuracy of utility records.

 ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • CAD & GIS Data Management & Analysis:
    1. Operate drafting and mapping workstations and software to assist with background drawings of existing streets, utility sites, and plant facilities for use in the design of engineering projects.
    2. Assist with coding, digitizing, and entering data into the GIS and Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) systems.
    3. Perform mapping and data analysis tasks to support custom map creation and quality control of GIS records.
    4. Generate database queries and reports and assist in verifying field-collected GIS data using GPS equipment.
  • Field & Office Duties:
    1. Collect GPS measurements and other field data, ensuring asset locations are accurately captured and incorporated into digital maps.
    2. Assist with design elements for utility projects, including the preparation of written documentation and daily activity reports.
    3. Support field inspections and construction oversight to confirm compliance with DMWW standards.
    4. Assist with fire flow testing.
  • Technical Support & Coordination:
    1. Work with the Engineering and CAD teams to review construction plans and verify adherence to design specifications.
    2. Collaborate with Information Technology and other departments to coordinate GIS, EAM, CRM/CIS, and GPS-related projects.
    3. Assist in developing and updating work procedures for efficient operation of GIS and related systems.
  • Additional Duties:
    1. Perform other tasks assigned that are similar in nature, contributing to the overall effectiveness of DMWW’s utility infrastructure projects

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: 

  • Completion of freshman-level coursework in Geography, GIS, Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • At least one semester of computer aided drafting training.
     

Licenses/Certifications:  

  • Must possess a valid Iowa driver’s license with good driving record.
    • This position requires Driver remain insurable under the Company’s coverage.

Other: Must pass pre-employment drug test and physical.

  • Frequent exposure to traffic and construction noise.
  • Frequent exposure to adverse weather conditions.
  • Occasional exposure to dust.
  • Office setting.
