JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Purpose and Scope
Execute and engineer laboratory testing in compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 and automotive standards by applying engineering judgment to data evaluation, result interpretation, and formal reporting. This includes running the physical test lab equipment (a computer interface with hydraulic and pneumatic machines with physical movement of bearings and associated tooling). Additionally, you will provide ongoing support to BA (Bearing Art) sales and engineering and evaluations of ILJIN products and associated components.
The Engineering Intern ensures technical validity, traceability, repeatability, disciplined 5S laboratory practices, and audit-ready documentation.
- Core Responsibilities
- Conduct a variety of tests using established test methods
- Tests may include durability, drag torque, NVH and ball ramp testing.
- Prepare test samples, set up and adjust and operate test equipment
- Inspect test samples as required including visual and dimensional checks
- Record test data including operating conditions and results
- Summarize test results using mathematical calculations, data reduction and statistics
- Tests may include durability, drag torque, NVH and ball ramp testing.
- Conduct a variety of tests using established test methods
- Prepare standardized, traceable, audit-ready test reports
- Provide analysis for returned parts
- Returned parts may include customer test parts, warranty parts, customer and internal line rejections, and parts for benchmarking
- Document returned parts
- Perform dimensional, metrological and/or metallurgical analysis as needed
- Provide root cause analysis for failure mode, where applicable
- Formalize findings into a written report
- 5S & Laboratory Discipline
- Apply and sustain 5S (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain)
- Maintain organized, labeled, clean and inspection-ready test areas
- Develop standard storage for tools, fixtures and documentation
- Identity and correct 5S nonconformances impacting safety or data quality
- Support continuous improvement
- Support management with priority tasks or special assignments outside normal lab duties when operational needs require additional assistance
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Education and Training
Required: Associate’s degree or technical / engineering degree in process
- Technical Requirements
- Good mathematical knowledge including basic statistics
- Ability to operate and maintain test and measurement equipment
- Mechanical aptitude and familiarity with use of basic hand and power tools
- Ability to follow test procedures and protocol in detail
- Safety first mindset
- Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications is a plus
- Demonstrated problem solving skills
- Learning agility
- Motivated, proactive individual with good interpersonal skills
- Team player
- Proficiency in Excel, Word and PowerPoint
- CAD experience a plus
Start Date: Earliest availability
Working hours: Minimum of 20 hours per week thru Mid-August; Negotiable hours for Fall, Winter and Spring (preference for minimum of 16 hours per week).
Status: Mechanical Engineering degree being pursued within 1-2 years of graduation
Location: Onsite in Novi, MI
