River Gallery School of Art (RGS) seeks motivated and creative undergraduate students to join our Creative Career Pathways Internship Program — a hands-on job training experience in documentary film making,  arts education, community engagement and exhibition practice. This internship provides meaningful, real-world experience while strengthening your leadership, communication, and creative skills across multiple disciplines.

About River Gallery School of Art: Our mission is to foster an inclusive art-making community where people are able to realize their creative capabilities and express themselves fully. We cultivate an atmosphere of trust, belonging, and collaboration where people make friends and build meaningful, often lasting relationships through the arts.

Internship Overview: As an intern, you will receive structured training in documentary filmmaking. This internship is ideal for students interested in film production, storytelling, community arts, nonprofit work, and museum and gallery practice.

Responsibilities include:

Documentary Film Project

  • Collaborating with the RGS editor on a short documentary film (approx. 30 min.) celebrating River Gallery School's 50th anniversary
  • Tasks include photo archiving, obtaining permissions, transcribing footage, organizing footage, and contributing to the editing process
  • This is a rare opportunity to gain experience in storytelling and practice post production skills in the genre of documentary films.

Exhibition Coordination

  • Participating in a 2-hour printing workshop at Wonky Press alongside RGS helpers and interns — a hands-on orientation that builds community and prepares you for the summer ahead
  • On Thursdays, assisting in the installation of weekly student exhibitions, overseeing the curation and hanging of artwork, and ensuring displays are well-organized and visually engaging
  • Curating and hanging the August Youth Art Show (opening Friday, August 1st) featuring work by RGS Summer Helpers and Interns, displayed in the Upstairs Hallway

Community Programs

  • Assisting with community programs, including work with refugees and New Vermonters

Professional Development: You will report directly to the Creative Career Pathways Program Manager and have weekly one-on-one meetings for mentorship, feedback, and professional growth. Interns receive training in:

  • Documentary film post production workflow, including archiving, transcription, and editing
  • Exhibition installation and presentation of student work

There are also potential future opportunities to participate in teaching residencies through River Gallery School's Art in Schools program.

Artist Development Opportunities: As an intern, you will have the chance to exhibit your artwork at RGS; the opening is Gallery Walk on August 7th. Additionally, you may use RGS studio space and take our classes at no cost.

  • Interested in art education, community arts, film, or a combination of creative disciplines
  • Enthusiastic about storytelling
  • Responsible, organized, and dependable
  • Open to feedback and eager to learn
  • Able to work collaboratively as part of a team
