Job Description:
The Network Systems Technician assists the Network Systems Administrator with the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, security, and administration of the district's servers, network systems, LAN/WAN services, internet access, communication systems, security systems, and related resources. The Network Systems Technician also manages the district website, provides technical support for network connected systems, and performs related work as required. The Network System Technician serves as part of the district Technology Department and reports to the Director of Operations.
Essential Functions: The essential functions or duties listed are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. - Utilizes network and operating system technologies in support of the district’s IT infrastructure, including network management software, active directory,TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, group policy administration, remote desktop services, Windows servers, SQL servers, current Windows operating systems.
- Maintains, troubleshoots and administers the district’s IT hardware and software as it relates to all file servers and Hyper-V infrastructure, data storage and recovery, cybersecurity, network integrated devices, and wireless access systems, all networking infrastructure systems. This includes ensuring the latest patches and updates are applied, ongoing protection from viruses and spam, evaluation of system configurations, and maintenance of surge protection and uninterruptible power supply systems.
- Maintains, troubleshoots and administers technology related to building systems. This includes lighting control, synchronized time, environmental, communication, security, and related systems. This is often in collaboration with the Buildings and Grounds department.
- Actively monitors network activity to ensure network security and compliance with all applicable laws, policies, and district guidelines.
- Performs equipment audits and monitoring to ensure proper operation and to anticipate downtime.
- Maintains documentation on district servers, network systems, environmental systems, communication systems, security systems, uninterruptible power supply systems and related resources.
- Resolves applicable system related issues directly or by communicating and working with outside vendors when necessary.
- Coordinates and oversees applicable system upgrades and installations.
- Researches and stays current with new and emerging technologies, implementation strategies, industry trends, and applicable legal requirements. Make related recommendations to keep district technology current, secure, and functional in support of district educational and operational priorities.
- Troubleshoots network wiring-related problems and coordinates the efforts of outside vendors and internal resources as needed for related resolutions and updates.
- Maintains district website, conducts periodic audits of the website to ensure accurate and current information, maintains website related documentation and instructions, directly assists with updates and training as needed, and ensures compliance with all applicable requirements including ADA and language accessibility.
- Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.
Complexity: Performs varied and responsible functions requiring a working knowledge of departmental operations, an ability to maintain strict confidentiality and system security as necessary, and the considerable exercise of judgment and initiative, particularly in situations not clearly defined by precedent or established procedures.
Independent Action: Works with guidance from the Network Systems Administrator and under general supervision of the Director of Technology, following department rules, regulations and policies, requiring the ability to plan and perform operations, and to complete assigned tasks according to a prescribed time schedule. Refers all questionable cases to the supervisor.
Additional Requirements:
Education, Training and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or related field; five to ten (5-10) years of network and technical support experience or related field preferred; experience working with network systems and technology issues; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill:
Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of server and network systems including Active Directory, PowerShell, Windows Servers, Linux, virtual machines (VM), network protocols, and communication systems, security systems and virus protection software. Knowledge of information systems, school and wide-area networks, wireless systems and data communications. Knowledge of personal computer standards, policies, security and other issues related to their management, use and integration within a school environment.
Ability: Ability to plan, organize and collaborate with others, ability to communicate effectively, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all school employees, students, and teachers; ability to recognize school-wide priorities and work cooperatively to support their accomplishment, ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deal effectively with interruptions, occasionally under time pressure; ability to work independently and effectively in a fast-paced demanding environment; ability to operate a computer and proficient in the use of various applications including Google administration, Generative AI, and database applications.
Skills: Excellent customer service, organization skills and time-management skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent computer skills including Google applications. Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. Skill in the use of the above-mentioned equipment.
