Victim Witness Advocate

Purpose of Position

 

The purpose of this position is to perform advocacy tasks for crime victims and witnesses, under the Victim Witness Coordinator’s supervision.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all- inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Appears in court with victims and witnesses. Attends interviews with prosecution and victims.

Interviews victims and witnesses to obtain case information and determine needs. Arranges victim and witness appointments with prosecutors.

Answers victim and witness questions. Provides information regarding case progress and court procedures. Updates victim and witnesses and notifies prosecutor when ready.

Arranges transportation to and from court for specific victims and witnesses. Arranges hotel and travel arrangements.

Travels with prosecutor to other locations as needed.

 

Additional Tasks and Responsibilities

 

While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.

Signs in victims and witnesses and notifies prosecutors when ready. Answers phone.


 

Takes care of walk-in inquiries. Helps felony secretary when needed. Covers main office switchboard.

Assists in locating people who need to be summoned. Makes counseling referrals.

Assesses, monitors, and minimizes high risk security situations.

 

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

 

Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in behavioral sciences, one-year public contact human services or court- related experience, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required.
