Position Overview
The Citizen Science Lab seeks a dynamic and passionate Science Instructor to develop and deliver engaging, hands-on biology programs for youth. This role combines curriculum development, teaching, and mentorship to inspire young scientists through inquiry-based learning with living organisms.
Key Responsibilities
- Curriculum Development: Design age-appropriate, engaging biology lessons and research projects utilizing lab organisms
- Instruction: Lead classes, workshops, and camps for youth in biology, scientific method, and research techniques
- Hands-on Learning: Facilitate student interactions with diverse organisms from fruit flies to reptiles, ensuring safe and ethical practices
- Mentorship: Guide students in designing and conducting their own research projects, fostering critical thinking and scientific curiosity
- Collaboration: Work with laboratory technician to ensure proper preparation and care of organisms for educational programs
- Assessment: Evaluate student progress and provide constructive feedback to support scientific growth
- Community Engagement: Represent the lab at educational events and communicate with parents about student progress
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in biology, education, or related field (Master's preferred)
- Previous teaching or educational experience, preferably with youth
- Strong knowledge of biological sciences and scientific research methods
- Excellent presentation and communication skills
- Enthusiasm for hands-on, inquiry-based learning
- Comfort working with diverse organisms (invertebrates, protozoa, reptiles)
- Creative curriculum development abilities
- Patience, empathy, and ability to adapt teaching to different learning styles
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed
- Background check required for working with minors
- Teaching certification is a plus but not required
Salary Range
$45,000 - $60,000 annually, commensurate with experience and education
