Lineworker Internship

LINEWORKER INTERNSHIP

Pay: $25.00/hour

This internship is intended for individuals completing their associate degree in utility linework.

 

NATURE OF WORK

This is semiskilled physical work in assisting senior lineworkers engaged in the installation, maintenance, and repair of distribution lines in the municipal electric distribution system. Work involves the performance of unskilled and semiskilled laboring tasks. Assignments are varied and provide broad experience and practical training leading to the development of advanced skills. Employees receive instructions and close supervision from technical supervisors in the performance of individual tasks and in the observance of adequate safety precautions. With experience, work is done with greater independence in routine or less hazardous tasks, but it is always subject to close supervision. Supervision is received from an administrative superior.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following examples of work are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:

  • Assists senior line workers in hanging transformers and in installing, maintaining, and repairing power lines by using hand lines to pass tools and equipment; drives light truck; assembles and attaches hardware to cross arms and transformers.
  • Digs holes for poles, and anchors; assists in setting poles, tamps poles, assists in installing house services and maintaining substations.
  • Operates equipment and tools used in maintenance and repair work; receives instructions in the proper use and care of tools and equipment.
  • Climbs poles, ladders or buckets to gain access to power lines and associated equipment.
  • Attach crossarms, insulators and auxiliary equipment to poles prior to installing the poles.
  • Trim trees that could be hazardous to the functioning cables and wires.
  • Lay underground cable directly in trenches or string cable through conduit running through the trench.
  • Under supervision perform general maintenance and repairs as needed.
  • Performs other work which is consistent with the essential functions of the job.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

  • Some knowledge of the hazards and necessary safety precautions related to electric utility construction and maintenance work.
  • Ability to follow detailed oral instruction and to establish and maintain working relationships with the public and fellow employees.
  • Ability to learn the work of electric distribution installation, maintenance, and repair operations and to work outdoors under varying weather condition.
  • Ability to meet such physical requirements as may be established by competent authority.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from high school supplemented by vocational courses in electricity with completion of two-year Lineworker school; some experience in general labor or installation and maintenance tasks related to electric distribution work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities, and skills.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employee must possess and maintain of a valid Nebraska Driver’s License when operating a vehicle.

When operating equipment that falls under the Nebraska Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) status, the employee is required to possess and maintain the proper license and endorsements as a mandatory condition of employment.
