Weapon-Related Injury Surveillance System Epidemiology Intern

Intern Title: Weapon-Related Injury Surveillance System (WRISS) Program Epidemiology Intern 

Eligible Academic Level: Master’s  

Preferred Field(s) of Study: Public Health, with coursework in epidemiology, biostatistics, and/or data analysis are welcome to apply. 

  • Semester: Fall & Spring 
  • Total Hours: 288 
  • Hours Per Week: Part Time (approx. 12 hours)  
  • Work Arrangement: In-Person 
  • On Site Location: 250 Washington Street, Boston MA     

 
Position Overview:  
The Weapon-Related Injury Surveillance System is part of the Child and Youth Violence Prevention Unit, within the Office of Statistics and Evaluation, in the Bureau of Community Health and Prevention. Intern will learn about violence prevention epidemiology with a focus on weapon-related injuries (guns and sharp instruments) by supporting the work of the Weapon-Related Injury Surveillance System (WRISS) Epidemiologist and tasks to maintain the WRISS Database. 

Responsibilities: 
Intern responsibilities include data entry, quality assurance tasks, data cleaning, data stewardship, and analyzing WRISS data. WRISS will be transitioning from mail-based to online reporting during this internship period and the intern will gain experience in data modernization by completing tasks related to data system testing, data quality management, communicating with partners, training development and implementation, and strategy/planning. Instruction and regular support will be provided to teach the intern skills that are new to them. A strong racial justice lens is mandatory.
