Position Overview:
The Registry of Vital Records and Statistics (RVRS), within the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, is seeking a Data Analytics Intern to support high-impact public health work. RVRS maintains and analyzes vital records data including births, deaths, marriages, divorces, and fetal deaths to inform policy, research, and population health initiatives across the Commonwealth.
This internship offers a unique opportunity to work on a special data analytics project focused on a key public health priority identified by the office. The intern will conduct an in-depth analysis of trends and distributions within the selected topic area, using vital records data to generate insights that support public health programs and decision-making. The role involves working with large datasets, developing reproducible analytic code, and clearly communicating findings. Proficiency in SAS or R is required.
Responsibilities:
- Analyze vital records data to examine trends and distributions related to a key public health priority.
- Clean, manage, and analyze birth or death datasets as applicable using SAS or R, developing reproducible analytic code.
- Create tables, charts, and summaries to communicate analytical findings clearly.
- Document methods and prepare brief reports or presentations on the topic
Skills & Qualifications:
Enrollment in a Doctoral or Master’s of Public Health program, interest in data analytics and public health, strong organizational and analytical skills, and strong verbal communication skills. Proficiency with SAS would be required and a willingness to learn data visualization tools.
