Position Overview:
Emergency Medical Service (EMS) data plays an important role in monitoring opioid-related incidents in Massachusetts. The Department of Public Health (DPH) has developed a detailed case definition for identifying and classifying opioid-related incidents using our ambulance data and reports the data on a public dashboard. However, since this definition was developed, there have been significant changes in the opioid landscape and improvements to our data reporting structure. The purpose of this internship will be to support in the modernization of our opioid overdose definition to strengthen opioid surveillance and update our reporting tools, such as our public dashboard and communication methods.
Responsibilities:
- Assess the current case definition for opioid-related incidents in EMS
- Assist in redefining and validating our current case definition
- Support updates to the EMS Regional Opioid Related Incident Dashboard to better reflect the case definition
- Conduct data analysis to assess changes in trends using SAS
- Summarize and present results to internal and external stakeholders
Skills & Qualifications:
Desired skills and qualifications would be enrollment in a Master’s of Public Health program or related graduate program, interest in opioid overdose surveillance, strong organizational and analytical skills, and strong verbal communication skills. Basic proficiency with SAS would be required and a willingness to learn data visualization tools.
