Position Overview:
The Office of Local and Regional Health (OLRH) Performance Standards unit is seeking an epidemiology intern for Fall 2026/Spring 2027. The Performance Standards unit supports efforts to improve the efficacy, efficiency, and equity of local and regional public health departments in the Commonwealth. The Office of Local and Regional Health collaboratively support local public health in improving health for every individual across Massachusetts. OLRH fosters partnerships across the state to build and sustain a strong public health infrastructure.
Responsibilities:
As part of this work, and the implementation of SAPHE 2.0 legislation, in 2026 OLRH conducted two statewide surveys to assess local public health workforce capacity, training, and funding. The epidemiology intern will provide project management for statewide public health workforce datasets, including data cleaning, analysis, visualization, and preparation of reports, infographics, and presentations. The intern may attend unit, office, and/or departmental team meetings to gain a broader understanding of governmental public health and epidemiology. The intern may also carry out other project management tasks as needed and as requested by OLRH.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Prior experience utilizing R and Excel for data cleaning and statistical analysis (descriptive statistics, stratification, regression)
- Skills and experience in RedCap, PowerBi, ArcGIS and/or Tableau would be of benefit but are not required
- Familiarity with Microsoft 365, including Teams, Outlook, Word, SharePoint, One Note, and PowerPoint software
- The intern should have successfully completed a minimum of one semester of each graduate level courses in epidemiology and biostatistics
- Skills required include data cleaning, statistical data analysis and quantitative reasoning, detail-oriented and organized, ability to solve problems, work effectively individually and as part of a team, and work within deadlines
