Overview

Apply to join the Science Museum of Virginia’s Exhibits team and gain hands-on experience supporting the care, installation, and enhancement of interactive museum exhibits.

Job Description

The Exhibits Fabrication Intern will gain hands-on experience supporting the maintenance, repair, installation, and deinstallation of interactive museum exhibits, including touring exhibitions. Working alongside Exhibits staff, the intern will help ensure exhibits are safe, functional, and engaging for guests.

The intern will also interact with guests by answering questions and explaining exhibit functionality, connecting exhibit design to visitor experience. In addition, the intern will complete a mentored project that enhances a current exhibit through fabrication, repair, or usability improvements.

Internship activities include direct work experience, professional development, meetings with Museum leaders, career exploration presentations, and networking opportunities.
 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old and enrolled as a college undergraduate or graduate student
  • First-generation college students are encouraged to apply
  • Interest or coursework in fabrication, engineering, industrial design, theater production, carpentry, construction, fine arts, physics, or related fields preferred
  • Basic familiarity with tools or hands-on making is a plus (training provided)
  • Comfortable working in public spaces and following safety procedures
  • Candidates should be dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a hands-on, team-based environment
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, lift moderate weights, and work in workshop and exhibit environments (with reasonable accommodations available)

Additional Qualifications

  • Previous Museum experience a plus


Commitment

  • This is a paid internship position
  • Interns will be expected to complete 300 hours between Mid-May and Mid-August
  • Interns will be paid at an hourly rate of $15/hr
  • Candidates selected for interviews should be prepared to discuss their general summer availability
  • If receiving school credit, candidates should specify their academic program and required hours
  • Interns must commit to participating in all required training sessions
  • The selected candidate must pass a criminal background check
