City of Richmond Mayor's Fellows Program - Fire and Emergency Services Intern

**The duration of the Mayors Fellow Program is 10 weeks, June 1 - August 7,2026**

The 2026 MFP Intern for RFES will assist the Deputy Chief of Administration in supporting daily operational, administrative, and project-based functions within the Fire Department. This position provides hands-on exposure to public safety administration, internal operations, and policy implementation. The intern will help support internal communications and processes and contribute to projects that enhance departmental efficiency.

 

Duties include but are not limited to

 

  • Assist with day-to-day administrative tasks, including scheduling, meeting coordination, and preparing briefing materials.
  • Conduct research and compile data to support departmental projects, policy updates, and operational planning.
  • Maintain and organize digital and physical records to ensure accuracy, accessibility, and compliance with departmental standards.
  • Prepare draft reports, spreadsheets, presentations, and correspondence for internal use.
  • Support budget tracking activities by gathering expenditure information and updating financial monitoring tools.
  • Assist with procurement documentation and other administrative processes related to resource management.
  • Help with internal communication efforts, including drafting memos, distributing announcements, and updating administrative information for staff.
  • Participate in special projects related to staffing, logistics, training support, or performance analytics as assigned.
  • Observe and assist with administrative workflows to gain an understanding of fire department operations and public safety administration.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

To be considered for an internship in this program, applicants must adhere to the following criteria:
 

  • The student must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program, be in good academic standing (as defined below), and be registered for courses during the internship period. Summer Interns do not have to be enrolled in summer school but must be enrolled for the upcoming Fall semester.
  • After graduating from a degree program, the student no longer qualifies for an internship with this program unless they have been accepted into a graduate program which is scheduled to begin within twelve (12) months of the hire date. 
  • Students must provide a college transcript and approval from the Academic Advisor or Career Development Counselor prior to the interview date.
  • Students must be lawfully authorized to work in the United States and are required to present proof of such eligibility prior to beginning work.
  • Undergraduate students must have completed 60 credit hours and have a 2.0 overall grade point average.
  • Graduate students must be enrolled at an accredited institution and have a 3.0 overall grade point average. 
  • No special certification or license is required.

Preferred:

  • Some previous GIS experience.
