Director Secondary Teaching and Learning

Job Summary
The Director of Secondary Teaching & Learning will provide leadership and vision to plan, align, develop, and implement curriculum, instruction and assessment within a Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) for academics, social emotional learning, and behavior at the secondary level.  This Director of Secondary Teaching and Learning reports to the Senior Director of Secondary Education. The Secondary Division of the Anchorage School District is composed of eight comprehensive high schools, nine alternative schools, and ten middle schools. Additional duties of this position include the coordination, supervision, and support for secondary school principals, instruction, activities and citizen outreach. This is an Exempt position with a retirement association with the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS).

Job Requirements
The following are required:

  1. A master's degree in educational administration or a related field with an emphasis in secondary education.
  2. Possess or have the ability to possess by start date an Alaska type B administrative certificate with a grade level endorsement covering 7-12.
  3. Five years of satisfactory school administrative experience.
  4. Two years of supervisory experience.
  5. Demonstrated record of success in leading strategic educational initiatives that resulted in measureable improvements in student achievement.
  6. Demonstrated knowledge and application of best practices in curriculum, instruction and assessment within a MTSS framework for academics and behavior.
  7. Knowledge, background, and training in supervision and management of secondary schools.
  8. Recent administrative experiences which include developing and managing budgets.
  9. Evidence of exceptional communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills. 


The following are preferred:

  1. Prior teaching and/or administrative experience in public school is preferred. 


Essential Job Functions

  1. Supervises, evaluates, and provides direction for secondary principals.  
  2. Serves as the point of contact for assigned schools and their principals.
  3. Works in tandem with the other leaders in academic services to focus the work of secondary-level staff on ensuring that all students leave secondary school prepared for post-K-12 schools or work force, with an emphasis on equity for traditionally underserved student groups.
  4. Facilitates the implementation of a robust multi-tiered system of supports for all students and the implementation of district teaching and learning initiatives.
  5. Uses data to inform decisions and works with the accountability department to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and learning initiatives.
  6. Coordinates secondary school athletics and activities.
  7. Performs as ASD liaison to various outside agencies.
  8. Provides training to assistant principals on matters of curriculum, student discipline and activities.
  9. Mediates disputes between parents, teachers, administrators, and students and investigates and responds to citizen complaints.
  10. Supports principals in the areas of instructional improvement and effective practices.
  11. Promotes professional growth for principals.
  12. Collaborates regularly with central office leaders to support building principals.
  13. Works with all bargaining units to reach resolution of concerns.
  14. Coordinates and monitors student long-term suspension and/or expulsion requirements.
  15. Works collaboratively with the division relative to assistant principal staffing and hiring issues.
  16. Maintains rapport and respect of secondary school principals.
  17. Develops, reviews, and adjusts staffing assignments with the senior director.
  18. Assists in preparing a variety of secondary school administrative reports. 


Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
