Public Affairs Specialist (PA)
Start your career. Build your skills. Serve with purpose.
When you join the United States Coast Guard, you don’t just start a job — you begin a journey that combines hands-on training, mentorship, and real-world experience.
What You’ll Do
PAs are public-communication specialists. You'll write news releases, shoot still and video imagery, serve as a spokesperson to the media, and maintain official social media accounts and web content.
You'll focus public awareness on important Coast Guard issues and respond to inquiries about Coast Guard actions. When crisis communications are required, PAs step to the center.
Watch: About PA Careers
Becoming a PA
When you join the Coast Guard, you'll start with Basic Military Training to learn the fundamentals of the Coast Guard and military life.
Most graduates will then begin a short apprenticeship at their first unit that introduces them to Coast Guard life and explore career paths. After a short period, you'll add your name to the specialty school list for PA. After completing this “A-school,” you’ll report to a new unit as a PA.
In some cases, based on your experiences and current service needs, guaranteed specialty school can be included in your enlistment contract and you’ll skip the apprenticeship.
Where You’ll Go Next
After you're established as a PA, you'll have opportunities for consistent career progression including:
- Merit-based promotions in rank.
- Advanced training and certifications.
- Chances to apply for Officer and Chief Warrant Officer career tracks with higher responsibility and pay.
