Community Building and UX Research

About Pangea Chat

Pangea Chat is a human-centered, AI-guided language learning environment funded by the National Science Foundation. We combine real peer-to-peer messaging with AI feedback tools so students can learn a language while texting their friends. We support 57 target languages and serve both university classrooms and independent learners worldwide.

We're a small, early-stage startup building something new in the language learning space: real conversations with real people, guided by AI.

The Role

We're hiring Language Community Builder Interns to grow and manage language-learning communities on Pangea Chat. You'll own one or more target languages, recruit learners into your communities from online spaces (Discord, Reddit, social media, campus organizations), create course content, and help us improve our AI tools by reviewing their output in your language.

This will be a mix of Social Media Marketing, UX Research and Online Community Management.

What You'll Do

- Build and grow an engaged community of language learners around your target language(s)

- Recruit learners from online communities (Discord servers, Reddit, social media, campus language clubs)

- Create and maintain course content and conversation activities for your community

- Review AI-generated content (grammar corrections, translations, word definitions) for accuracy in your language(s)

- Provide weekly product feedback — what's working, what's broken, what's missing

- Track your work with a simple daily timesheet (date, hours, what you did)

Hours & Languages

Your weekly hours depend on how many languages you can manage:

| Languages | Hours/week | What it looks like |

| 1 language | 20 hrs/week | Build and manage one community |

| 2 languages | 30 hrs/week | Manage two language communities |

| 3+ languages | Up to 40 hrs/week | Manage multiple communities across languages |

Strong proficiency in one language is better than surface-level knowledge of three.

Compensation

- **$15–20/hour** based on experience and language proficiency

- **Performance bonus**: $20 per subscriber you recruit, paid at the end of the internship

- 10-week internship

Qualifications

Required

- Currently enrolled or recently graduated from a university

- Strong proficiency (intermediate-advanced or higher) in at least one language other than English

- Comfort with social media and online communities

- Interest in language learning and helping others learn

- Self-motivated. You'll have real autonomy and responsibility!

Preferred

- Proficiency in multiple languages (more languages = more hours and impact)

- Experience moderating or building online communities (Discord, Reddit, student orgs)

- Experience teaching or tutoring a language

- Familiarity with language learning apps or methods

- Located in or willing to work from Richmond, VA

What You'll Gain

- Hands-on startup experience

- See your work have real, measurable impact on a live product

- Build skills in community management, content creation, and growth

- Earn a performance bonus tied to the community you build

- Strong reference and potential for continued involvement after the internship
