Game Math Intern (Summer 2026)
Are you a data-driven thinker with a passion for game design and systems balance? Castix is seeking a Game Math Intern to join our team and contribute to the refinement of our medieval fantasy game, currently in its late stages of development. As an intern, you will play a critical role in reviewing and validating core game systems, helping ensure that foundational mechanics such as combat, equipment, and item recipes are balanced, scalable, and built for long-term success. This is a project-based internship.
Responsibilities:
- Work with raw game data to analyze and evaluate core systems such as battle mechanics, itemization, and crafting recipes
- Develop mathematical models and frameworks to assess balance across player stats, creatures, and in-game economies
- Identify inconsistencies, risks, and potential exploits within game systems and propose data-backed solutions
- Maintain strong data hygiene practices, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and usability of datasets
- Create visualizations and reports to clearly communicate findings and recommendations to the development team
- Collaborate with designers and developers to validate assumptions and refine gameplay systems
Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Data Analytics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Strong ability to work with ambiguous or incomplete datasets and draw meaningful conclusions
- Experience with data analysis tools such as Excel, SQL, Tableau, Power BI, or similar platforms
- Understanding of mathematical modeling, probability, and/or systems balancing
- Strong analytical thinking and attention to detail
- Passion for video games and an interest in game systems design
We encourage the use of AI as a supportive tool for research and efficiency, but not as a substitute for critical thinking. This role requires a strong human-driven approach to analysis, interpretation, and decision-making.
This is an unpaid internship, but it may be eligible for course credit. The internship is fully remote, and interns will need to use their own equipment. The duration of the internship is negotiable. Interns will be provided a manager/mentor from a senior staff member. The intern will have flexible hours and may need to communicate with staff members across various time zones.
If you are an analytical thinker looking to apply your mathematical skills in a real-world game development environment, we want to hear from you! Please send your resume and any relevant project work or portfolio as part of the application process. We look forward to seeing how you can help shape the balance and integrity of our game systems!
How to Apply:
Submit your application via Handshake. Please upload your resume in PDF format (no .doc or .docx files).
In addition, include a short written response that covers the following:
- Why you are interested in this internship
- Any relevant experience not explicitly listed on your resume
- Your favorite video game(s) and what makes them compelling to you
