Junior Geologist & Geotech

2026 Field Season: Junior Geologist / Geotech

Piton Exploration is hiring junior geologists and geotechnicians for the 2026 Alaska field season. This is a field‑based role supporting mineral exploration projects across the state, with crews working out of remote fly‑in camps.

This position is a good fit for University of Alaska students or recent graduates who want hands‑on experience in mineral exploration and field geology. You’ll be working directly with experienced geologists and field crews and learning how exploration programs actually run in Alaska.

Responsibilities vary by project, but may include:

Junior Geologist

  • Collecting rock and soil samples (channel, grid, ridge/spur sampling)
  • Logging drill core and assisting with geological descriptions
  • Helping with basic geological and alteration mapping
  • Recording field data and uploading GPS or mapping data into GIS

Geotech

  • Processing drill core (washing, sanding, organizing)
  • Measuring and recording recovery and RQD
  • Labeling, cataloging, and tracking samples
  • Keeping core shacks and sample areas organized

General Field Work

  • Helping with setup and upkeep of remote fly‑camps
  • Following wildlife and bear safety protocols
  • Participating in daily safety meetings

What We’re Looking For

  • Students currently pursuing, or recent graduates with, a degree in geology or a related earth science
  • Comfortable hiking long distances in rugged, off‑trail terrain
  • Able to handle physical field work and long days outdoors
  • Strong attention to detail when handling samples and data
  • Valid driver’s license

Experience with GIS, GPS units, core logging, or technical hiking is helpful, but not required.

Training & Supervision

You’ll work under experienced field geologists and receive on‑the‑job training in core logging, sampling procedures, field safety, and remote camp operations.
