Position Summary
The Pingry School seeks a dynamic and intellectually engaging Middle School Mathematics Teacher for a potential opening for the 2026-2027 school year. This role is designed for an educator who views mathematics not merely as a set of procedures, but as a language of exploration, conjecture, and logical proof.
We are looking for collaborative educators who thrive in a student-centered environment where problem-solving is both the primary vehicle for learning and the desired outcome. The ideal candidate is a versatile practitioner who can inspire a love of mathematics in middle schoolers, guiding them through a robust curriculum that spans from foundational number sense in Math 1 to advanced concepts in Algebra and Geometry. We seek professionals who prioritize active learning and possess the relational skills necessary to navigate the unique social and emotional developmental stages of Middle School students. Beyond the whiteboard, these educators serve as dedicated mentors and advisors who foster a culture of persistence and intellectual risk-taking.
The Middle School Math Department seeks professionals who:
- Facilitate Discovery-Based Learning: You prioritize student-led inquiry and the application of mathematical concepts over memorization, guiding students to "uncover" mathematical truths through collaboration and exploration.
- Demonstrate Curricular Versatility: You are comfortable teaching a range of Middle School math courses, including Math 1, Math 2, and Math 3 (X and Y), Geometry, with the ability to support students in transitioning toward Upper School honors-level coursework.
- Serve as Relational Mentors: You understand that Middle School success is built on a foundation of trust and emotional well-being; you excel in the role of an advisor and advocate for young learners.
- Prioritize Team Collaboration: Thrive in a "unit-first" environment, actively contributing to a highly collaborative department that values shared resources, collective problem-solving, and a unified approach to instruction.
- Commit to Curricular Alignment: Ensure a consistent student experience across different sections of the same course by adhering to agreed-upon sequences, assessments, and pedagogical standards.
- Act as Collaborative Innovators: You enjoy working across departments, especially with Science and Computer Science, to design interdisciplinary experiences that connect abstract mathematical logic to real-world data and technology.
- Embody a Growth Mindset: You treat mistakes as essential data points in the learning process and are committed to your own continuous professional evolution as a mathematician and educator.
Responsibilities
- Instruction: Teach four sections of Middle School mathematics, utilizing a curriculum that emphasizes problem-solving, graphical representations, and the clear communication of mathematical logic.
- Advising: Serve as an advisor to a group of students, supporting their academic, social, and emotional development during these critical transitional years.
- Pedagogical Leadership: Guide students in developing critical thinking skills through the use of symbols, written language, and oral expression to explain complex reasoning.
- Community Contribution: Fulfill an additional “plus one” requirement as assigned (e.g., coaching, club leadership, or Math Team coordination).
- Availability: Provide extra academic support for students during flex, community times, conference period (CP), or designated help sessions.
- Engagement: Participate in all required faculty meetings, department collaborations, middle school project week, and professional development activities aimed at Middle School pedagogy.
Qualifications
- Educational Background: A bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a related field (e.g., Engineering, Economics) is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
- Subject Matter Expertise: A broad understanding of Middle School math standards and the ability to translate complex algebraic and geometric concepts into age-appropriate, engaging lessons.
- Pedagogical Skill: Strong interest in or experience with student-centered, inquiry-based teaching models and a deep understanding of Middle School developmental needs.
- Inclusive Excellence: A deep-seated commitment to cultivating a culture of belonging where every student feels seen and valued. This includes the ability to design an inclusive classroom that ensures all students, regardless of background, feel confident and capable in STEM.
- Community Mindset: The interpersonal skills necessary to build a supportive community and work cross-functionally with diverse constituency groups, in alignment with Pingry's mission and Honor Code.
- Digital Fluency & Innovation: Proficiency in educational technology, including the Google Suite, Desmos, GeoGebra, and learning management systems (e.g., Veracross). A demonstrated interest in the intersection of technology and math, with a focus on how digital tools can evolve classroom instruction and data visualization.
- Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and a willingness to pivot instructional strategies to meet the evolving needs and readiness levels of the students.
